Backup file corruption question

Thread needs solution

This is actually a concern, not an actual issue.

I looked on my destination HD for the files making up my backup (Full + incrementals) but only found two files (the tib file and the metadata file). So my big concern is what do I do if one of these files becomes corrupt? Is there a way to pull my files off or have I lost everything? Is it now impossible to recover my Mac? How does one proceed if the data file or the metadata file become corrupt? Do you intend to break this out into individual files in the future?

Would appreciate it if this concern were addressed.

Thanks.

Hey DB,

That is why we generally do 2 things:

1. make 2 backups, this can be done in 2 ways:
(a) make a backup like you have and then copy it to another drive; or
(b) make a backup to one location - like a portable hard drive, then make a 2nd backup to another location like another hard drive or computer (recommended)

2. Test backups - a backup is only useful when it works - and the worst thing we can do is not test our backup drives, a couple of ways to do this:
(a) do a restore - this is obviously delicate if you are restoring to the same machine you backed up and obviously very time consuming - therefore I strongly suggest option b:
(b) with acronis, "explore" the backup and try to pull out a file like a document or picture to make sure it comes out perfectly - if one bit of a pic is changes it can cause the picture not to open or be messed up

The point being is that normally if my pc dies I should be able to restore everythig but worst comes to worst and I can't do that, at least I can pull out the individual files by exploring and restoring the specific ones I need.

I don't think we push people enough to (a) backup their machines and (b) test their backups - also if you do backup to 2 different hard drives, I recommend not keeping them in the same physical premises, incase of fire, theft etc - you have a backup somewhere secue...

I always ask my firends/family/clients - if you lost your hard drive or computer or phone for that matter, what would you have lost and how valuable would it have been?? Almost always it's priceless - so spending a little time to do some of the above is worth it - or pay someone (you trust) to do it for you!

The above is my own personal advice based on my own experience (20 years IT) and not necessarily those of Acronis. Acronis has saved me many times but it has also from time to time failed (not necessarily their fault - faulty hard drive, faulty controllers etc).

Hope this helps...
