BUG: "The backup was paused due to the battery power saving mode." when no power saving mode is configured

Thread solved

Environment:

  • iMac Pro
  • macOS 10.14.2 (Mojave)
  • Acronis True Image 2019 23.4.17000
  • Synology DS413 NAS with four slow (5400RPM) 4TB drives configured as RAID5

Steps:

  • Disable all forms of sleep/power saving on the mac
  • Disable all forms of sleep/power saving on the Synology NAS
  • Create a share on the Synology NAS
  • In ATI, create a large backup job (6TB in this case)
  • Schedule the backup

Expected:

  • ATI performs backups as scheduled

Actual:

  • ATI sometimes fails to complete backups, logging the reason "The backup was paused due to the battery power saving mode."

Notes:

  • The DS413 NAS is slow low end NAS, although it is confirmed as fully functional based on multiple write & readback verification tests of 6TB file sets across the LAN.
  • When performing backups manually and watching progress, in the area where ATI shows the free space remaining on the backup destination, ATI occasionally flashes a message saying the backup destination is unavailable for 1/2 second before continuing the backup.
  • Between the power saving mode message and the temporary "unavailable" messages, I suspect ATI does not correctly handle slower NASes. Is there perhaps a timeout which is much too short for detecting offline network backup media?

I have the same issue of "The backup was paused due to the battery power saving mode." It is maddening and prevents me from getting any complete backups after dozens of attempts.

Latest model MBP, 32 GB, 4 TB SSD. External USB3 Seagate drive as backup target. PowerNap off, Sleep off, Power down drives off, etc.  I have even attempted the backups while I am actively using the computer and at some point the backup stops and gives the same error about power saving mode even though I am actively working in the computer.

After commenting above. I reattempted a backup with the settings as shown below. The monitors were on the entire time as I continued separate work on the machine. The backup failed with the same error "due to power saving mode."

Hello everyone,

Could you check in the Preferences of Acronis True Image (in the Acronis True Image menu) whether you have the "battery" setting enabled?

If not, could you send a screenshot with an error message?

Hi Renata. Thanks for the comment.

My preferences dialog looks exactly like yours with only the first item un-checked.

Yesterday, I made several attempts to get a successful incremental backup. This is a typical error message. When it happens, it pauses for a few minutes and then starts again on its own. After a few attempts over a couple of hours (repeating the same message on each pause), it will eventually say the "backup failed."

In the activity log, it looks like this. Each red failure message indicates several attempts by Acronis to resume the backup, all with the above failure message before it finally gives up.

Richard, this is quite strange. We have checked in the code and the "battery" option is the only one that could give the information message like in the screenshot.

Could you send us a system report via the feedback form? Just let me know when you do so that I could find it in the system and asked the developers to have a look.

Thanks for your help. I sent the system report just now through the Feedback option. I realize this could easily be something related to macOS or even hardware. My external drive is a 5TB Seagate portable USB3 drive connected through a CalDigit TS3 hub. The target drive is formatted as APFS with an Acronis recovery partition. I updated to macOS 10.14.3 just yesterday.

This may be a "red herring", but I would also mention that it seems like I am more likely to get a successful backup when I delete my backup job entirely and empty the target drive. The full backup to an empty drive with a new backup job seems more likely to be successful.  It seems like the more full the drive becomes, the less likely I am able to get a successful incremental backup and it quickly becomes simply unable to get the incremental backup even with 600 GB available. All of that may be coincidence and is just speculation.

Richard, the situation is quite complicated.

One of the sql databases got corrupted, this may be the reason why you see the battery message. It may be fixed by recreation:

(close Acronis True Image console)

In Terminal run: sudo rm /Library/Application Support/Acronis/TrueImage/Database/PropertyStorage

(open Acronis True Image console)

As for the backup failure - there are multiple crashes of trueimaged (daemon that does the backup). The reasons are currently unclear, we will need to investigate them closer.

Thanks!  I added double quotes around the path, but I ran the terminal command. I re-started the backup as a test and we'll see how it goes. Sorry if I missed that re-creation trick in the support area somehow. I could have tried that on my own.

A re-attempt at backup also failed with the same power message after rebuilding the settings. I did notice (as I have before) that before that, the backup spontaneously restarted at least once. You have to be looking at it to notice when that happens. Perhaps that was the daemon crash you mentioned.

I'll stop posting and give it some time. Feel free to reach out if you need any more information or testing. Not sure why my environment is a problem. I try to keep it as clean and generic as possible.

I've tried uninstalls and reinstalls before with no difference. Is there anything I need to do to get a complete / clean uninstall if I were to try that again?

Richard, thank you for updating me! Could you send the report once again after rebuilding the database? We would like to check that the database now works correctly to eliminate its impact in this situation.

I will send the report now. Thank you.

As an update. I feel like a reliable fix (for me) is to empty the target drive then delete and re-create the backup job. When I've done that, several times over the last few months, I am able to get reliable full and incremental backups, no matter what the power settings are in preferences. After we had this discussion, I have had 2 successive successful backups (first full, second incremental). For me, the issue seems to occur when the target drive is relatively full. I see the available space on the target drive dropping with each successive failed backup attempt.

Sending the report now.

I don't have that setting on on iMac Pro running Mojave.

I also haven't seen the problem recur in the last few days. I'll snapshot the error if I see it again.

Is it possible that there was a transient problem where ATI incorrectly detected battery power support on a non-mobile mac?

Brian, the non-mobile Mac was detected normally (as you do not have the setting) so the backups should work.

Did you send us the system report with the feedback? I did not find any, maybe you have sent it using another email? If you did not send the feedback yet, please, do (in the Acronis True Image menu - send Feedback).

It would help us investigate the issue.

I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro 2018. The backup completed the 1st time but fail afterwards with the error "The backup was paused due to the battery power saving mode."

I have sent feedback with a system report

I have the same issue as well. Backup fails every time, no matter if it is started manually or automatically (per schedule). According to Activity log, it started on 22nd of March - no successful backups since then.

MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.4

Acronis True Image 23.5.17780

Sent feedback with system report.

Same issue with my backups as well.

Backup fails every time, no matter if it is started manually or automatically (per schedule).

MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.3

Acronis True Image 23.5.17780

Sent feedback with system report.

Hey everyone!

Thank you for your reports. Sent them to development to analyze.

In have exactly the same problem - multiple failed back-ups due to the same 'battery' issue.  I am running Mojave 10.14.3 on a Mac Mini.

If this issue is unresolvable I would ask for a refund of my subscription.

 Hello Clive,

we'd appreciate if you could send us the logfiles from the affected Mac via the feedback option (in the Acronis True Image menu - send Feedback). The fix is likely to be released in the next product version. You may want trying to install a previous build as workaround. If you decide to go with refund, please refer to https://kb.acronis.com/content/21242

Hello everyone,

We have found the issue - it is a crash in the application. The error message that is shown, is wrong. We will fix both the crash and the incorrect error linkage in one of the next updates.

Internal issue key is TI-167080.
