Clone failing hdd to new ssd

Can someone help me with whether Acronis for Mac will actually clone a failing hdd to a new SSD. I've done this many times on Windows but first time on Mac. I've purchased the full version, installed it on the Mac (which is running very slowly due to bad sectors on the hdd). I'm currently 'backing up' 'My Mac' to the ssd connected by USB, but my fear is this just a backup and not a clone of the drive....? Will I actually be able to boot from the SSD when the process has completed?
Other clone processes have not worked like the built in Mac clone tool. Had a bit of a play with Time Machine and might have to revert to that if Acronis does not do quite what Im wanting it to do.
