Clone from MacBook Pro late 2018 (1TB) to external SSD (1TB Samsung T5) fails with not enough space message

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image 2020 on Mac fails to clone the disk sighting low space on the target disk. I am trying to clone the entire disk and not any specific partition.

Source: MacBook Pro late 2018, 10.15.2 (Catalina), total disk size 1TB SSD (GUID Partition Map) and APFS volume. Bootcamp installed. Total disk in use - 535GB (lots of free space on the 1TB drive)

Target: External Samsung T5 SSD 1TB, brand new and empty with no files.

Data to be cloned - 535GB and despite this, the cloning fails with a message saying there isn't enough space on Samsung T5. To make it worse it comes up with this message after repartitioning the target and deleting everything on it. In my case, I had nothing on the target but imagine if there was some data on it, it will delete it first and then say it can't proceed!

I think this happens because although both the source and target are 1TB the Mac shows a total disk size of 931.81 whereas the Samsung T5 shows a total disk size of 931.51. Is this what make Acronis think it can't and shouldn't clone. If yes, does this not need to be addressed?

Regards,
Jayesh

Hello Jayesh,

sorry to know that you've faced issues with cloning!

It is not necessary that the destination disk is of the same size as the source one, it can be bigger or smaller, but its overall size must be larger than the used space of the source disk plus 10%. For example, you have a 1000 GB hard drive in your Mac, only 200 GB is used. If you want to clone it, the destination drive size must be 200+10%=220 GB, or larger. https://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ATIMAC2020/index.html#41693.html

I'd try checking both drives for errors with Disk Utility and if the issue persists, raising a support ticket for investigation.
