Migrate easy Compaq Presario 1600s win98se frustrations
Computers; Two Compaq Presario 1600s laptops one with Win98SE, working USB flash drive and external HDD enclosure drivers, one with flakey HDD, and damaged WIN ME.
Plan; Mirror, clone, or whatever it's called the working HDD content on the WIN98SE laptop to two new HDDs using Migrate Easy latest version, purchased, installed, and registered. Install new cloned HDD in each laptop and be happy.
Problems;
1. Will not work with old HDD in computer, newHDD in USB enclosure - during reboot does not see the new USB HDD, cannot see it as Windows has not booted up yet. Reading more implies I must put the old HDD in the USB enclosure, the new HDD in the computer, and use a bootable disk created using the "Create bootable Rescue Media" option which is called a "reverse clone". This leads to the frustrating element;
2. The "Create bootable Rescue Media" option doesn't work in the paid for and registered version 7 built 644 Migrate Easy I have installed.
3. The "Create bootable Rescue Media" option might work in True Image 10 but upgrading to True Image 10 is not an option as it apparently will not run on Win98SE.

Hello Jesse,
First of all, let me apologize for the delay with response in this thread and for the inconvenience you experienced trying to resolve the issue. I will help you.
We always recommend our customers to clone from bootable CD's, this method is most stable and faster, especially for cases when an old version of Windows is used.
So this is the first thing we should try. Do not worry regarding the CD creation - I have sent you the link to download the ISO file via PM. You can burn in on any PC using some third part software and then bring to the target one for cloning.
If you are not familiar with the ISO burning please take a look at this article.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.
Thank you.

I burned that .iso file to CD on a different computer, is it normal to not see any files or anything on the CD after you are done?

Hello Jesse,
Thank you for the fast update!
Yes, Windows won't recognize any files burned to the CD as it's based on Linux, which surely has different filesystem.
So feel free to check whether the CD works with your PC, looking forward for the results from you.

Thanks, Alexander. I tried the CD I burned with a new formatted hard drive as C in the laptop and the original hard drive hooked up to the laptop's USB. The computer boots on the CD I see it loading the linux, then an Acronis logo, then it restarts system. It boots up on the CD again, loads linux stuff, an Acronis logo appears, then it restarts system. Again and again. The light does come on on the USB harddrive but I don't have a clue why it just keeps rebooting.

Hello Jesse,
Thank you very much for your cooperation.
Please check your PM's once again, I have sent you the customized version of the product as the link to download the ISO file. Please check whether it works.
Also, I think it would be better to communicate via PM, so I can handle your case faster.
Thank you.

Alexander sent me a version that worked with my older Win98SE Compaq Presario AMD processor laptops. Most of the conversation took place in PMs and e-mail. The outcome was exactly what I wanted, two laptops with new HDs mirrored from the Win98SE laptop's older HD. I installed the new HDs in the PC and ran Acronis software stand alone off of an image on a CD.
I would say the product is great and service I got was great.
Thank you!

One more little thing, I had planned to use the good HD, (the one I cloned to the new HDs), for a backup USB HD. After the sucessful cloning that old HD can't be read. The computers see it as a generic USB HD but it doesn't show up in "my computer" or in the disk manager on a XP machine. Does the stand alone ISO program do something to the original HD that causes that? How can I make that old HD usable as a USB HD again?

Hello Jesse!
Thank you for your kind comment and for sharing your concerns with us. I will be glad to assist you!
I would like to assure you that Acronis Migrate Easy 7 does not affect any data or structure of the original drive while cloning. When the software clones the drive, it just accesses its data, but no changes are made.
So I assume that it is either the hardware problem (maybe the USB port failure) or some Windows glitch. In order to localise the issue, please change the port you are using and also please try to add this disk as New one with the help of Migrate Easy software (Please check chapter 4 in the User's Guide for more details).
Should you have any further questions or concerns - feel free to leave a comment here, and we will definitely help you/
Thank you!
