Retasking laptop due to upgrade

Thread needs solution

I am upgrading my wife's laptop to a better version with a little more horsepower.

However, her games, email and other personalized "stuff" has been accumulated over the course of the past 3 years.

I would like to MOVE her current software and email "stuff" to the new device, keeping license codes and other components intact.

The old laptop though will be re-tasked. I don't care about games and such; I care about other things. I'll wind up using it, but need all her "stuff" wipped out.

I'm thinking that Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 will do the trick. Is that true?

Thank you for your help.

Jim,

Migrate Easy will clone that is make an exact copy of the current laptop drive and place it on the new drive. With a laptop (due to it being a different laptop) especially this is not a good idea as few of the drivers already installed will be usable by the new machine. there is also the problem that some laptops expect a non standard disk layout.

Your better bet is to use True Image 2012 and PlusPack as this will allow you to just copy the email database across. However, you can't do this with programs as there will be no registry entries on the new PC so the software won't work.

What I'm building upto is you need to use the PlusPack add on alongside TIH 2012 and make either a partition or disk image, the PlusPack will allow the hardware registry entries to be ignored whilst keeping the software ones, you will then have to download or obtain the drivers specific to your new laptop.

Thank you.

I lost it a bit at:
"...make either a partition or disk image, the PlusPack will allow the hardware registry entries to be ignored whilst keeping the software ones..."

I'm unclear on the creation of the partition/disk image part because I don't see how it will fit with the ability to load the software where it belongs (with all the registry entries intact).

While I have the TIH 2012 operational, I'd be happy to add the PlusPak in order to accomplish what I need (actually it would be 2nd license for my Wife's laptop - which I would use along with the PlusPak (2 licenses there).

I knew that Acronis used to have a "save the settings" thing that allowed recovery of known software products; although they appear to have dropped that from the line-up (since TIH saves everything anyway).

Any additional insight is greatly appreciated.
