Windows not loading past "Preparing Desktop" after clone
As stated above, I have an old HD (raptor) I copied to a newer drive. However after doing so and booting, Windows does not really go beyond "Preparing Desktop", basically right before your desktop loads.
Switching back to the older (original drive) and Windows boots fine. Before formatting the newer drive using Migrate Easy 7.0, I had the newer drive running in a different computer with no issues.
I've completed the clone copy twice and still cannot fully load Windows 7.

First of all I would like to thank everybody for their info and helpful advice. Now down to business, I had a dual boot 500gb sata drive with vista ultimate on c: partition and win7 ultimate as e: drive in second partition. I know, I know this was a bad decision to begin with but I had done some dumber things in my day. Back to the problem, I cloned the dual boot 500 gb drive to a 1tb drive with easy migrate. Vista booted without a hitch but win 7 hangs at preparing desktop and Iget the error (DwmHintDxupdate) not in the user32dll. library. userinit.exe. ! I know that there are other posts on this matter but I am truly lost . All of my wife's business work files are on the win7 installation, I am in SOOO MUCH TROUBLE any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ed B.

Which boot manager actually boots your system, the Vista one or the W7 one?
Do you have a Windows 7 install or repair CD available?

After the clone, vista on the c:drive boots. I have the 7 install disk but it did not repair the dll lib.

Edmrb.
When you start W7 are you able to get into safe mode by pressing the F8 button?
If W7 starts to boot, it would be unlikely that the two boot managers have become confused.
The Vista,W7 and W8 repair CD is annoying in that you need to run it multiple times to see if it will fix anything. Thinking this through though, if you are able to run the W7 installer and select Command Line, you would then be able to run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow), this might be all that is required to get you up and running again.
There are two ways to get to the command prompt, either wait for the recovery wizard to offer command prompt as an option or just after you see either the installation or repair by pressing the shift + F10, then type in sfc /scannow

This post http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/… has some information that may be helpful to others reading this post and trying to fix the issue reported here.
I can't offer a fix, but these errors look a lot like your problem.
Do you still have the original source disk available?

I can boot into safe mode but vista loads . If I select to try to boot into safe mode through the dual boot option win 7 just hangs at trying to load the desktop. Booting into safe mode is only through f8aftar post.
