Recovering is failing when image is stored on external sata drive

Thread needs solution

I am using a dell PC with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and the latest build of ATIH 2012. External drive is a freecom e-Sata.
Yesterday I tried to test the recover of the image created by Acronis.
I started ATI with the startup recovery manager (booting with F11) and chose the backup-file. But the program is telling the image-file could not be found, allthough I am able to choose it.
Then I booted windows normal, started ATIH and tried to do the resotore again. I chose what to recover and ATIH said it has to restart now. But again - the restore is failing.
Controlling the log-files everyhink seems to be normal.
It is the first time I have these problems. ATIH 2009 - 2011 were working fine.

Greetings Uwe Dembski,

Thank you for taking the time to post on our Forum, we are glad to see you here.

Kindly accept my apologies for any inconvenience resulting from your recovery operations. I will be happy to help resolve your issue and assist you with any additional questions or issues you may have.

First and foremost, have you tried to validate the backup archive to see if it is corrupt? If you haven't done so already, could I ask of you to validate the backup archive either from Windows or Acronis Startup Recovery Manager to see if your backup is corrupt or was not successfully completed at the time of creation. See this Web-Help guide for more information on validation and the different types of validation methods.

The backup archives you have listed in the product interface, either in Windows or under Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, may display the archives but in actual fact may not be present in your external SATA drive, or it may be that the name of the archive was changed, and that the backup archive is unidentifiable by Acronis True Image Home during recovery, even though it is very well visible in the user interface. Please try and browse your external hard disk drive from Windows Explorer, to see if the archive is present and that the name corresponds to the archive name displayed in the product itself.

Simply to test whether the issue lies with the e-SATA hard disk, you may try to move the existing backup archive to a different storage media, if any, and recover from this storage device.

Also, it may be possible that your backup archive was created from an earlier version of Acronis True Image Home that may be causing the issue. If that is the case, could you please notify me of this, so that we may proceed with the necessary steps to further assist you.

Additionally, is it possible that the backup archive was created during the feature Try&Decide enabled, as this may be the underlying reason to your issue?

If none of the above apply in your case, you may choose to skip these points and see below for additional recommended steps to take.

To localise the issue could you please reattempt to recover your system image from the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, or from under Windows, and try to take screen captions of any error messages you come across during the process, so that we may properly diagnose the issue based on the reported message. Additionally, and more importantly, could I kindly ask of you to generate a System Report from the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager or Windows depending on which environment you performed the recovery operation. Upon generating the Acronis System Report, please do inform me and I can generate an FTP link for you to upload the logs directly to our FTP server.

I highly appreciate your patience and consideration despite my lengthy suggestion post. Please notify me of any updates with respect to any of the above steps or points mentioned at your earliest convenience, so that I may resume with the investigation, drilling down to the issue based on your following response.

Let me know if I can be of help with additional questions or issues.

Kind regards,

Volkan

Do the restore from the recovery CD, not from the F11 ASRM and not from Windows. Remember that the CD might show you drive letters different from what Windows shows you. Double check drive labels when navigating to find your backup file, and when you choose the destination for restoring.

This link may be helpful.

If you are only wanting to check or copy of few files, look at item #5 at this link.

I did the following:
Create a new image job. Made an image and the validation. No problems. Trying to do a restore:
a. From windows
- Choose to restore. System starts new and simply no restore.
b. From Acronis Secure Zone
- Choose to restore. System starts new and telling "Acronis True Image Home cannot detect Volume 1 from "Meine_Volumes".
(e-Sata is drive G:)
c. Boot from CD
- Chose to restore. Failing again.

After the alert Acronis not detecting the image I choose to search for images. Now the image is found (e-Sata is now drive F:).
I tried to restore from Acronis Secure Zone too, no problems. It seems there are problems with the e-Sata. So I allways have to do one additional step and
search for the Image.

I am not able to post screenshots because windws is not running by trying to restore.

Uwe,

If Windows keeps changing your drive letter on the external, you can help to prevent that by assigning a specific drive letter (such as x or y or z) to the external disk. Then, most every time you attach the external, it would always be assigned as that drive letter.

If you assign a specific letter, you will need to create a new backup task pointing to the new location and also assign a new empty folder to the task.

However, when booting from the CD, it is Normal to have to use the browse for backup option as the CD is using LINUX software to locate the drive.

Note however, assigning a specific drive letter will not help to prevent the need for browsing when booted from the CD.
