Change backup file name v2011 ...

Thread needs solution

I created a file backup configuration. I browsed to a different folder than the default, set incremental backup as the type, and ran the backup to create the initial full version. I would now like to change the file name . I renamed the file on my hard drive, but when I go back into edit backup settings and change the name, it complains it isn't the correct type of file.

To summarize, after creating and running an incremental file backup to create the initial full version, how do you change the file name and not have to recreate the full backup again?

Thanks

Jon,

With ATI, in general, never tamper with the TIB files created. Do not rename them, move them or delete them. If you want to change the name of your backup files, the safest thing to do is to create a new backup task. You can enter the name you want when you select the destination. Remember that the name of the task can differ from the name of the TIB files on the disk. That is OK. If you enter a name for the TIB files, the task will take the same name by default, but you can change the task name whenever you want.

Also, with ATI, do not edit a task if you want to change the backup name, destination, scheme, or retention rule (note you *have* to create a new backup if you want to change the backup compression or encryption). ALthough the product allows it, it is not recommended and can lead to confusion or errors at restore time or for future backups. Simply create a new task, stop running the old task. When the old task TIB files are old enough, delete the task. Alternatively, move the TIB files to another directory for safekeeping, delete the current task, and then create a new task.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for the feedback. It would be a nice feature to be able to rename files or a chain of files. Not a huge deal here though.

Is there a way to copy the settings of an existing task/backup configuration so that you can just change the backup name, file name, etc.? I have a lot of data and a rather complex file system situation with multiple drives, so setting up a new backup task is somewhat of a pain as I have to painstakingly QA the list of directories and files that need backed up. I tried "clone backup settings", but that didn't seem to resolve the issue.

Jon

Well, clone backup settings is supposed to do just that, but I have to say I have never used it...

Otherwise, no, there is no way that I know of.
