Backup Corrupted
Hi, I am a total noob when it comes to Acronis, I have no idea how to use Acronis properly, but I attempted to back up my system a while ago and I have the backup now but I cannot mount it. How can I mount it and view the files on my backup? when getting such erros.
I am getting this error right now:

I am sorry but I do not see how number 5 can help me. I have read through the first few pages and you seem to think that I can mount the partition, or open the backup at all, but I cannot. When attempting to mount, or open the backup file, I get the following error code:
Cannot open backup archive on the specified device. Either there is no archive on it, or the archive is corrupted.
When I double click on the backup, instead of mount it, I get this message:
An error occured while opening the backup archive.
Cannot continue the operation because the backup is corrupted, or it is being used by another process, or you do not have enough permissions to perform the operation.
I have the backup on an external network hardrive, could that be causing the issue? I am going to transfer it to my laptop to see if that helps. But any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

In all likelihood you backup file is corrupt. Nothing can salvage it. The errors you get following Grover's link pretty well confirm that.

I am assuming that the transfer of t he backup file to the laptop did not resolve anything?
This link may be of some help in troubleshooting your issue.

Which version of TrueImage Home?
Version info found in the Help/about section and you may have to hold down on the alt key to be able to see the help menu.
Have you tried validating the backup?

So what you're saying is that, something suggested here by Alexander:
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3976
Would not be possible for me? I think I will attempt the checkdsk and see if it helps. It is a rather large backup file and I would like to go through any and all options before just scrapping it. Thank you for your opinion though.
- Log in to post comments
Hey Grover, yeah the transfer didn't help. It finally completed last night and it still comes up with the same errors. I will check the new link out! thankyou. :)
EDIT:
I am on Acronis True Home Image Update 1 Build 6696
I have not tried validating it yet, I was concerned doing so may cause more harm then good. I will try now if you suggest it.
- Log in to post comments
The error messages offered 3 possible causes so we really do not know which is applicable. If the backup is corrupt that means the read is not matching the write which is what validating will check. I do not see the validation as having any risk of injury to the file as as I does is to check the read/write content of the backup. I would do the validation when booted from the bootable media CD.
Was the backup file created using the same 6696 build?
There is a newer version available in which you could download the bootable media ISO file. This would enable you to create a new bootable media CD just to see if it would make any difference in the read. The downloadable iso file can be downloaded from your registration account and then burnt to a blank CD as an image.
What version of Windows? Absolutely do not delete the backup at this point.

Hey Grover, first let me say I appreciate you helping me. Secondly, I am on a Windows 7 64bit machine. I have attempted to validate the backup, both the copy on my desktop, as well as the copy on the external, and both return no results. I right click, select archive, and then select validate, and nothing happens. The backup was created with the same version, I believe, is there a way to tell whether it was or not? I do not know where to go from here. I do not know if I have any cd's on hand, can I make a bootable USB instead? with the ISO file?
Well, I am trying to follow these instructions:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/1526
But I am running into some issues, is there a way to do it without using CMD?

Not exactly sure of what you are asking.
1. The bootable user created True Image Home recovery CD will enable you to both create backs and restore your backups to a new disk even if the old disk fails.
2; Instead of using the CD as a bootable media, you can create a bootable Flash drive which has all the same as the bootable CD. This is easily done. Insert the usb flash drive into the computer and select create bootable media from with the TrueImage menu inside Windows. Choose the option to create the usb device. This will destroy the contents of the flash drive but afterwards the flash drive can be used for other things. The downside to this option is that you have to change bios boot settings each time you boot from the usb flash drive.
3. You can also make a full size usb disk bootable but this takes more effort and has the same requirement of changing the bios boot settings each time you boot from the flash drives. Some computers are easier or harder to access usb boot settings--it depends.
One of the easiest methods is that explained by MVP MudCrab. Click on the first line of my signature below and check index items 4c or 4D. I personally prefer the Grub4Dos method using sections 1 and 3.
As for your recovery situation. If you are attempting to recover your data, Aconis support will assist in problems which involve Recovery. You will need to complete a support ticket. If the backup is truly corrupt, they cannot make it less so and you have lost your data. I would encourage you to make more frequent backups and test them to make sure your recovery process actually works. Don't wait for the need but prepare yourself in advance. The Acronis backup and restore software does work so I am not certain as your issue. It may be related to writing to the external network hard drive. Do take the extra time needed to have the backup validated at time of creation. Many users use the bootable media to make sure the bootable media also validates the backup as it is the bootable media which is the correct restore vehicle.

This above link shows you how to create your backup tasks so you do not have to depend upon others. I am not a technician nor trained in computers either. If I can learn (and I'm getting up there in years), you certainly can as well. it is never too late to start. Also, if you explore my signature index in more detail, there is much help there. Also the help files along the left margin of this web page.
If you have questions or need help, ask them in the forum and the volunteers posting on the forum will be glad to assist. If you are willing to help yourself they will help you to become proficient doing so. There is a learning curve which requires both time and practice. Having an extra disk also helps in restoring backup files without messing up your main disk.

Thanks for all the help Grover. I really do thank you for your assistance and time. When I meant, to clarify earlier, was how do I make a bootable Flash drive, because after following the Grub4Dos steps, I ran into several errors. One of which was " No OS found " when attempting to boot from the flashdrive, another was " Operation quit " something about a missing or unplugged cable? I really have no idea how that happened, but I will try once more. I will also consider a support ticket if I cannot figure this out myself.

I use Grub4Dos on several devices. I use the steps listed in section 1 and 3. I found no need for the section 2.

Huh. That must be what was causing my issue then, cause I was following all steps. Let me re-try and I will post back with the results. :)

Well still getting issues with the bootable media. :(
I took a picture with my phone while it was booting and I attached it to this post hopefully you can see it. :)

In order to boot from a USB device, you must make 1 maybe 2 changes in the bios so it will
1 choose the usb as the type of boot option (rather than a hard disk or CD device)
2. choose the specific usb device at the boot device for that boot session. (you may have more than 1 usb deviice so it needs to know the specific device.
Did you make those changes before attempting to boot the usb device?
The error message is not familiar to me so I am no help there.
Note when changing the boot sequence of a device, you usually must use the specified method to move the device to the top line of the selections.

From the picture, it doesn't look like the computer is trying to boot from the USB disk. Make sure that the BIOS settings is enabling booting on USB.
- Log in to post comments
hey pat, thanks for assisting, I have a Dell XPS 1645 running Windows 7 Professional. When I boot, I can choose f12 (Boot Options) and choose what I want from the list, my main hard drive, my usb flash drive, and my optical drive. I do not believe I have to change the settings in the bios to boot from the USB, because as I said I can choose it on startup. Also I apologize for the crappy picture and it being upside down.
- Log in to post comments
If you can choose it on startup, then check very carefully the wording. Usually, in order to boot from the device, you must move the usb listing to the top listing and this may involve using the page up/down on a F key.
- Log in to post comments
I have a newer Dell laptop model than yours, but setup should be similar.
While you can use the F12 Boot Menu for temporary one-time boot change, I recommend you edit the BIOS so you'll always know your boot sequence.
- Hold F2 (your key may be the same, but could be different) while booting to access BIOS (also called Setup Menu).
- Access the Boot menu header.
- Use + and - keys to select and move an item up or down in the boot priority list.
- Select and move CD/DVD to top of the list, in case you ever need to boot from the optical drive.
- Select and move USB to second in the list. That will enable booting from a USB flash drive, such as Grub4DOS.
Here's the boot sequence I use:
CD/DVD
USB
Hard Drive
Removable Drive
eSATA
Network
Insert your Grub4DOS USB flash drive in a USB port, and boot.
If you're having trouble creating the Grub4DOS drive, let me know and I can provide a possibly simpler alternative that I use.

I dont know what is going on. I have set it up as you have instructed and it still gives me the error message in the picture I attached earlier. I have no idea why it would be doing this, as I have boot from USB drives before with no issues. Is there any other method I can use? or maybe I will try going through the steps once more.
Oh, I've also noticed that in the Acronis Article about the error I am receiving it says:
23369: Acronis True Image Home 2011 Fails to Add Archive to List with Error "Failed to collect archive in Try & Decide session"
What is the Try & Decide session? I do not have Try & Decide on, and have never used it.

Most likely Tuttle will respond with his suggestions about Grub4Dos.
In the meantime, if you have an extra Flash drive 512mb or larger, try the simplest test which would be to insert the flash drive and then to use the Acronis Create bootable media and create an Acronis bootable flash drive which would be use equivalent of the bootable CD. See if you can boot from that. Old data on the flash drive would be lost.

Still the same errors with a different flash drive. :/
I still dont understand why this is a try and decide error...
I re-tried it for the 17th time, and I finally got a menu, to choose from on boot. I select Acronis True Image Home 2009 ( or 2011 if I change the title because I have 2011 version )
and I then get this error:
Booting Acronis True Image Home 2009 (9,615)
map (hd0,0)/t1-12-9615.iso (hd32)
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue...
- Log in to post comments
have you confirmed the file name is correct as typed in the grub menu?
Recheck this line. it reads t1 but was it meant to be ti--just checking
map (hd0,0)/t1-12-9615.iso (hd32)
Mine reads like this but I have my iso optionally in a subfolder labelled "!Grub4Dos"
map --mem (hd0,0)/!Grub4Dos/2012-7119PP.iso (hd32)
You wrote
"Still the same errors with a different flash drive. :/ "
Is your comments related to Grub4Dosl? or Does this mean that you used the Create Acronis bootable flash drive and you got the windows indicating success but that the Acronis created flash drive still failed to boot?

The error message I am getting is the same message that I am told to put into tthe menu.lst file, as follows:
title Acronis True Image Home 2009 (9,615)
map (hd0,0)/ti-12-9615.iso (hd32)
Here is an image of it attached now.

New edit:
I can cause the error 15 if the iso file name does not match that of the name inside the MENU.LST file.
Try changing the name in both as a precaution that they both are the same with no spaces inside the file name.
End of edit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am understanding your file is
ti-12-9615.iso
and located in the root directory of the flash drive.
The results so far would seem to indicate that the computer is booting into Grub4Dos and reading the MENU.LST file but not liking the contents of the file. Try renaming the iso file and its name inside the menu as a precaution that they both are identical without spaces.
I don't know that this would help but try this inside your MENU.LST file and make sure the file extension is LST and not 1st.
----------------------------------------------
Sample MENU.LST begins below
timeout 300
default 0
title Acronis True Image Home 2009 (9,615)
map --mem (hd0,0)/ti-12-9615.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
title CommandLine
commandline
title Reboot
reboot
title Halt
halt

Ok, so if my ISO is titled AcronisTrueImageHome2011.iso what should be in my menu.lst file?
EDIT:
Well I got the flash drive to boot, and I attempted to recover my backup from the bootable media. I got the following error:
This is not the last volume of the backup archive.
What does this mean?
- Log in to post comments
You asked
"Ok, so if my ISO is titled AcronisTrueImageHome2011.iso what should be in my menu.lst file? "
The important thing is that the actual file name and the menu name be exactly the same. My preference is to keep them short--my example would be "ATH2011.iso" for your file name and menu name. (or ATH2011-XXXX.ISO with the x being the build number). If you are talking about the title name, its your choice of whatever you want to use to identify the version and build of TIH being loaded from the title.
Your error message would seem to imply that there is more than 1 file to the backup and not all the files from the backup are on the flash drive. You might also get a similar message if you are attempting to use an older version of TrueImage to restore a backup created by a newer version.
If the correct backup is in the folder, try rechoosing. If you wish, you can post a picture of the storage folder containing the backups.

Would the same error be caused if I used an older version of acronis for the backup, and newer version for the recover?
I do not understand how there would more then one file for the backup. I do not recall there being more then one when the backup was finished. How are more volumes created? is there a way to track down the files/volumes that go with this one? The title of the backup and I am attempting to recover is called:
MyBackup13_12_2010_15h21m1.tib
It should be the complete backup, it is all 55 gigs that should be there..no more no less.
- Log in to post comments
Normally, there is no issue if using a newer version bootable media to recover an older version backup. Boot from the flash drive and validate the *.tib file.
Here is an example of how to validate using the flash drive. Yes, it should be just one file.
Is this the same file you were attempting to MOUNT and could not?

I cannot get to step 4. Once I choose the back up and hit ok it immediately says a pop up MSG that this is not the last volume.
- Log in to post comments
In step 3, the type backup (full or inc, etc) is displayed. You may have to move the scroll bar laterally to see it all.
If it reads full, there is not much more you can do unless you have other backups. Or, try the bootable CD that made the backup so even then, the chances are very slim of recovery.
As your issue is recovery, why not place a support ticket with Acronis and they will often help with recovery issues without charges.
- Log in to post comments
It will not let me select the backup and get to that point, so I cannt see if it says full or not. :/

If I were you, my next post would to to create an support ticket asking for assistance in a restore issue. Good luck.

I'm unsure - did you get your USB stick to boot TIH recovery version? The error message using your USB stick can mean the stick isn't reporting itself as a bootable drive or the MBR hasn't got the correct information in it or you forgot to copy grldr over.
I use a utility available from RMPREPUSB.com - I've found this the easiest way to prepare a USB stick.
My entries in Menu.lst for all Acronis recovery media, changing just the file names of course
# YOU must modify this entry if it does not boot
title Acronis ATIH2012_6131 and DD11A
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /2012_6131_dd11A.iso
map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 /2012_6131_dd11A.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
As to your problem, have you tried making a new image to see if you get the same Acronis error?

Hi Colin,
I got the bootable usb to work. I can now boot it just fine. But when I am using the bootable media, and I attempt to recover or validate , it tells me " THIS IS NOT THE LAST VOLUME OF THE BACKUP ARCHIVE "
So as I said, the bootable media is not the issue now. Now I am getting the error that this is not the last volume of the backup archive, which is in correct. It is the whole backup, all 55 gigs of it. I can tell by the size. I do not know where to go from here, I am waiting to hear back from Acronis.

KB,
Any chance you are working with a copy of the 55gb file and the original still exists?
- Log in to post comments
Its highly likely that the file is corrupt unfortunately.
- Log in to post comments
Hey Grover,
the original file is on a network attached drive, a my book live. I transferred the file to work with it on my laptop internal drive, so yes it is a copy, but the original is in tact on the network drive. In the same location I saved it to. This is why I thought it might be a permissions issue, but then I moved the file to my internal drive ( where I am admin and have full permissions ) and I still get an error.
- Log in to post comments
Can you try validating the original copy without moving it?
- Log in to post comments
From Windows Explorer, right clicking on the file, choosing Archive>Validate - nothing happens. Nothing pops up, nothing happens what so ever. From the bootable media, it will not even show me my Network attached drives, or any network details at all. :/
Also, I cannot add the backup to the backup list using ATI, so I cannot attempt to validate it from there either. When I try to add it to the backup list I get the following error:

How long do you have to wait to talk to someone in support Chat? I have tried 3 different browsers and waited on 3 different "hold to be connected to a rep " screens. For up to 20 minutes, never to be connected to any support. :(

KB,
I've only used Chat once and it took about 4 minutes for someone to appear, but then I'd be contacting when most of the world is asleep. Your experience does sound too long.
I've always preferred the email contact method, it does take a day longer to get replies, but I've always found them more detailed and responsive - just personal experience you understand.
I'll see if an Acronis moderator can help at all.

Hey Colin, I finally got through to one, only to do remote assitance and have the rep sit there doing nothing for 15 minutes while he read through steps to try to fix my issue. Needless to say once he finally got through the first couple of steps, which I had already tried, I had to get off. I am going to attempt to do Chat again this evening. Since they seem to be open 24/7

Hi Anton, and to whom ever else it may concern.
3 chat experiences later, and there is absolutely no reasonable explanation as to what has happened to this backup.
To review what all I have done for any rep's who reference this thread:
1.) I moved the file to my internal laptop drive as per advice from Grover. Using Acronis 2011, When attempting to mount, or open the backup file, I get the following error code:
Cannot open backup archive on the specified device. Either there is no archive on it, or the archive is corrupted.
When I double click on the backup, instead of mount it, I get this message:
An error occured while opening the backup archive.
Cannot continue the operation because the backup is corrupted, or it is being used by another process, or you do not have enough permissions to perform the operation.
2.) I then created bootable media as per advice of Grover. After finally getting the bootable media to work, I attempted to validate, mount, or recover the backup ( FROM THE BOOTABLE MEDIA ) and got the following error:
This is not the last volume of the backup archive.
3.) Updated to Acronis 2012 Trial.
4.) Attempted to add backup to the backup list in order to validate the file. I got the following error:
There is no information about this error available now. You can use the links below to search for any additional information that might be available.
found at this KB Article:
http://kb.acronis.com/errorcode/bookmark/0x01010005_0x01010005_0x01EF00…
5. 3 chat supports later, and there is no resolution or any valid reason as to why this file is corrupt.
To be clear. When the file was created. It was originally backed up to an external NAS system, a WD My Book Live. The backup process completed successfully and the validation at the time of creation was also successful.
The original file is still on the NAS system, un touched, un renamed, and un moved. The file SHOULD NOT be corrupt, unless files can just go corrupt on their own? This to to me is ridiculous, and very very disappointing.
