Full backup of folder failed
After 2-3 years of trouble-free backing up using Acronis True Image v10 – Build 4942 (OS Windows XP SP3), I have attempted and failed several times to start a new Full Backup of my Photos folder (size 89.2Gb) . The backup started but stalled – and stayed stalled for several hours until manually stopped. The backing up stopped at different times with the different attempts – any thing between 20% and 60% completed.
I am backing up to a folder on an external hard disk (Western Digital, MyBook 500Gb) connected via Firewire. I checked the hard disk using Chkdsk and it passed with no errors reported – although the Phase 4 process did take a long time and did not proceed smoothly. I also used the diagnostic tools provided by Western Digital and again the disk passed.
There were no errors reported in Device Manager.
I defragmented the external hard disk but the backup still failed.
The external disk has sufficient free space (~160Gb) for the back up
The file of the aborted backup was labelled “PhotosBackUp#8_1.tib”. In setting up, I had requested “PhotosBackUp#8_.tib”. All previous full backup files have been labelled as requested (i.e. without “1”) and incremental backups based on the full backup are named “PhotosBackUp#8_2.tib, PhotosBackUp#8_3.tib …..etc.). I have not seen a file labelled with “1” previously.
No errors are reported in the TI log nor were any pop-up warnings shown during the attempted backup.
Incremental backups of other folders on my system to the same external disk (albeit to a different folder) are still working OK.
Validation of the previous photos archive backup, which included 14 incremental backups, still succeeded – taking approximately 1.5 hours.
I should be grateful for any advice on how I can run another full backup of my Photos folder.

Thanks for comments DwnNDrty.
Not sure what has changed - certainly all hard disks are the same as when last ran a full backup successfully.
I take the point about perhaps using a method other than TI for keeping a backup of photos. Just that TI had been so reliable and convenient - until now!
I would like to know why I now have the problem with TI because I need it for backing up other folders that will benefit from compression.
