true image 9 won't restore single folder from a full backup

Thread needs solution

made a full version backup of 65.3 GB on 6-4-2012. Now am trying to restore a single folder and when I indicate to proceed nothing happens. I have tried to restore to original location and to a new folder, neither works.

Joseph,

How are you trying to restore a folder? If as it appears you made a complete disk or partition image then this is what TIH expects to restore. What you can do is to either Mount the tib image which will give the tib image a drive letter and then you can drag and drop from the image to the actual hard drive, or you can explore the image using Windows Explorer and drag the folder or file from there.

If you made a files and folders backup rather than a disk based image, then you should be able to restore just a single folder.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the comment. I made a full disk image backup. When I try to drag or copy the folder to the system disk, I get a message that the folder is not available, access denied.

OK Joseph,

That problem is caused by Windows security, but it is odd you are getting it if you are using the same PC and OS installation that made it.

What you need to do is add the folder or file to your user permissions. To do this, right click on the file of folder and select properties, then click on the Security tab. From here click on the advanced button and then Change Permissions button, click on the Add button on the new form that pops up and enter your user name, click on Check Names button then OK back out of all the open forms you have just opened.

Remount or re-explore the tib file and you should now be able to access the folder or file. If you want to do this to the complete tib file you will need to perform the above steps on the root directory of the mounted or explored file and if a message pops up asking if all child folders should be included select yes.

Hi Colon,
I am running Win7 ultimate 64 bit and backing up to an external HD over USB. When I right click on the backup folder the only options are explore, open, or copy, I cannot alter the permissions. I might be having a bigger problem that started last monday when there were warnings that there might be internet problems. When I opened Thunderbird to read emails, I got a message (not responding) and Thunderbird was useless. I figure it's either an OS problem or a Thunderbird problem but could not firgure out what the problem was. So I uninstalled Thunderbird and loaded a fresh version thinking I could recover most of my emails from the backup copy. This led to my current problem not being able to recover the Thunderbird folder from the backup and I'm not sure I want to go back to the whole disk image, since I will lose all the changes since the backup. Any ideas on what caused the not responding problem? Incidentally, IE works fine and other users on the computer have no problems with Thunderbird. Strange, huh?

Joseph,

Are you really using True Image 9 or True Image 2009? Part of your problem might be due to the fact that TIH 9 is not Windows 7 compatible, nor is TIH 2009 unless it is the version available as Seagate DiskWizard or Western Digital Disk Software.

Can you post some screenshots of the right click option you see?

The first thing to do is to mount the image so that it appears as a hard drive on your system with an actual drive letter, then follow as per images below. Note your mounted image will have different icons as I'm using 2012 for the demonstration.

#1 Type in your User name.

#2 Click Check Name.

#3 Press OK.

A further thought, if you have the space copy the tib file onto your maind drive and see if you can then access the file.

Colin,
I am using Acronis True Image Home 2009 and have had no problems doing full disk image backups but have not tried to restore until now. All I have is disk images but would like to restore a single folder. My system disk has three partitions, they are used primarily as follows: C: contains the OS and application programs, D: is for data and E: is for pics and music. It is from C: that I am trying to restore the Mozilla Thunderbird app from which I lost my email files when I uninstalled the program because of the not responding problem ( I know I should have made backups but I thought I hand one). I have made a couple screenshots but can't firuge out how to paste them into this comment, probably simple but I haven't been able to find out how on the web. Essentially when I right click on the folder the popup has only three options Open Explore or Copy. I don't get the detailed options you show to change permissions.

Joseph,

What OS are you using? I'm puzzled as to why you don't see a security tab when you select properties for the folder or actual file.

Are you definitely Mounting the image?

Could you post some screenshots or snipshots, if using Vista/W7/8, of what you see in Windows Explorer.

Are you able to copy the tib file onto your main drive?

Colin,
I am using win7 ultimate 64bit. Here are a couple screenshots

I hope the screenshots come through, since I'm not sure of how to post screenshots.

When I right click on the Mozilla Thunderbird folder, I don't see the properties menu only a popup with three options.

Joe

Colin,
I am going to try to post the screenshots again:

Joseph,

I think the problem is you are Exploring the tib image, try Mounting it - click on Tools and Utilities tab, scroll down and select Mount, a drive letter will be allocated to the tib image, from there you will be able to access it in Windows Explorer as though it were a disk drive. If you have integrated TIH into Windows, right clicking on the tib file will give you a Mount option

This in itself might allow you to either import the mail folder into your current Thunderbird email folders or manually copy it. If that fails with the same message, then try adding your security identifier to the folder as I detailed above.

Colin,
I can't find a Utilities tab under Tools and have not found a way to mount the Thunderbird folder. Here is a screen shot of my Tools dropdown:

Joseph,

Look under the Tools and Utilites tab in True Image itself, can't post a screenshot at the moment as I'm at work, have a look at the online help for 2012 and Mounting.

Oops, forgot you are using 2009, it won't be on a tab but there is a Tools and Utilities entry on the main menu.

See http://download.acronis.com/pdf/TrueImage2009_ug.en.pdf Chapter 12 for more information. Pages 93 and 102-104.

Colin,
Sorry I haven't responded but unfortunately the external hard drive that I had saved my backups on crashed and I am not able to do any more testing on how to recover my emails. I have taken the drive to a computer shop and they removed the drive from the shell but were not able to access the data. So for now, I guess this thread is finished. Thank you for your help in supporting my questions. I haven't decided whether it is worth the expense to have some data recovery shop remove the platters in an attempt to retrieve the backups. So I will just have to live without the lost emails. I have ordered a new backup drive and will have to start over. Thanks again.
Joe

Sorry to hear that Joseph, hope you are able to get them back somehow.
