Failed to open data stream.

Thread needs solution

We have the latest version of Acronis 2011.. When we back up the os drive the software works perfectly. When we run a seperate backup on a datadrive with the backup runs as normal but it the second to last set it fails on Failed to open data stream. The backup when tested works as we are able to restore a file, there are errrors. 16 Error 8/1/2011 7:18:27 PM Failed to open data stream.

Jonathan,

There can be many reasons why you have this error message. The first thing to try is to delete the backup task and start a new one. You can copy/move any existing TIB file you want to keep to another directory before deleting the task.

Hi @Pat L - is this the only solution to the problem? (deleting the backup task and creating a new one?)

having just got FTP working, and having backed up over 105GB It woudl be nice if there was an alternative!

is there any official explanation for the problem, a solution or a patch to resolve? Whats in the existing backup taske that is causing the issue?

thanks in advance!

I know there can be many reason why this "failed to open data stream" shows up: networking (connection, security), application, etc. Often just creating a new task or using a UNC for a network share solves it. Sometimes, you have to modify your router/NAS SMB share settings. Sometimes you have reinstall the application. Sometimes you need to have Acronis examine your system and network data to identify the problem. I listed them in the order many more experienced users recommend to try to fix. There is no silver bullet.

I have exactly the same problem. I am guessing that Acronis is doing something weird with Networked connections. If I use Windows explorer on the remote computer and browse to the backup folder I see that the file has been created, but if I click on "Explore all versions" in Acronis I get an warning "Specify location of versions 3" and get the option to browse for it. When I click browse, I get a Windows Explorer type window in which, under Network the name of my server, named PDD, appears in the list twice. This also happens when I use Windows Explorer from the Acronis computer. There is only one computer on my network named PDD so what is going on. All my other networking functions work perfectly so this has to have something to do with Acronis.

I also recently started getting the error "failed to open data stream". This backup task worked fine until last week but fails every time now. It seems as though the backup is written properly, but then Acronis 2012 can't find it!

Gingertech,
Simply create a new backup task. When the failing backup is old enough, you can delete it.

This is infuriating!!! Everytime you guys come up with a new product you mess things up. I have the same issue EXCEPT I am using a USB Drive. I have deleted the task and recreated it. I still get the "Data Stream" Error. Also after the last update the backup will not shutdown per the check mark. I have tried to put the shutdown command in the post commands BUT everytime I close the and save the window and go back in teh Shutdown command is gone.

Ron,
If you need help on these problems, could you kindly provide some more information about your environment. Such as Windows version, ATIH version, a more thorough explanation of the error, a screen shot, etc.

I am running a laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I finally eleated EVERY backup set I had and created a new set. BUT THE SHUTDOWN does not work. You can see the check mark in the box after you start the backup that says SHUTDOWN. Lets get this fixed once and for all. I had this problem with Version 11 it took almost a year to get this fixed!

Ron,
What version of Acronis True Image Home are you running? Are you doing your backup from within Windows or the recovery disk? I would like to replicate this issue on my system to see if there is a solution for you. I currently have a Windows 7 Utl. 64 bit system I can test on. I currently have ATIH 2012 Update 2.1 build 7133 installed. Will test and get back to you.

Version 2012 Update 2 Build 7119 I am running the program within Windows. Also why does the program keep going No Responding?

Ron,
I set up a differential task and set the options to shutdown when complete. I manually ran the backup, and it shutdown correctly. I also then scheduled the same backup. When the scheduled task ran, the computer shutdown properly again.
I would suggest that you download the latest version from your account. Un-install your current version, then install the new version.
If you need help with the 2012 version, you should start a new post in the 2012 forum. More people using 2012 will be exposed to your posts, and could then offer you some additional tips.
You can save your backup settings and tasks before un-installing your current copy, but I would recommend that you create new tasks and backups after a new install. Be sure to do a full disk backup before the un-install and re-install, just to be safe.

i just oppened up Acronis and went to Help and check for updates. It stated I have the latest version which from you post I do not.

Using ATIH 2011 in Win 7. Repeated attempts to move backup gives "Failed to open an archive"

error. The backup is in a usb external hard drive. The backup has been validated. It can be

mounted. Trying to move it to NAS where I have moved a backup previously. I have removed the

backup from the list and re-established it. Event Log shows the following information repeated

three times:

1. Failed to open an archive
2. The specified file does not exist
3. The system cannot find the file

And, lastly, marked with a red X: Failed to open data stream

Can you help?

Robert,
Since you have removed the backup from the list, and re-established without a problem, you could remove the backup from the list again and manually copy the backup file(s) to a folder on your NAS, and then add the backup back to your list.

Thanks, James F:

As you suggested, I gave up trying to move the backup. Instead, I made a new backup to my NAS and deleted the old one. We may never know why the file could not be moved. But all is okay for the present.
