Charles,

I am not sure you need Migrate in addition to Acronis True Image... Why do you think you need it?

I thought it would magically copy a windows installation, programs and data, from my laptop to a desktop computer that I can use while my laptop is in the shop...

Charles,

Migrate Easy will clone a hard drive, so your desktop drive will be an exact replica of your laptop, but the data on your desktop will no longer have access to whatever is on it at the moment. If you are planning on using a separate drive to copy the laptop data to and then replace your actual desktop drive with that then no problem.

However, your copy of True Image 2012/13 will be able to do that also using the cloning option.

If you intend to over write the desktop drive, you should make a complete disk copy of the drive and store that image somewhere before cloning the laptop drive. Depending on your OS you may find the desktop copy of your laptop will have problems booting.

If all you need are data files (that is not running actual programs just the data they use) then just make a complete disk image of your laptop and on your desktop use TIH2013 to mount that image, which will make it look like a disk drive and your programs installed on your desktop will be able to for example access your document files.

What might confuse you is that the marketing page for the Plus Pack talks about "Migrate", but this is not linked to the "Migrate" product.
The functionality of the Migrate product is de facto included in Acronis True Image (ATI), whithout the Plus Pack.
The Plus Pack add 2 features to ATI:
- an easy way to create a WinPE-based recovery CD, which utilizes Windows drivers, hence supports more hardward configuration than the default Linux-based recovery CD,
- the ability to restore an image to dissimilar hardware (a new motherboard or a different disk controller, or set up. A new disk doesn't qualify as dissimilar hardware). Hence the notion of "migrating"
