Migrate Easy 7 - cloned drive boots to Fatal System Error

Thread needs solution

I used Migrate Easy Trial Version 7.0 to clone an 80 GB ide drive to a 500 GB ide drive. When I try to boot from the cloned drive, I get the dreaded blue screen with the following message:

Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000407 (0x00000000 0x00000000).

The system has been shut down.

I've tried cloning twice now: the first time in automatic mode, the second time in manual mode, selecting the option for cloning the partitions as is.

Any suggestions?

Nathan,

Is this a laptop by any chance?

The quickest way to solve the problem is to grab an XP install CD and run a system repair on the new drive, insert the CD and select install, then when the installer informs you that it has found an existing installation select repair, the install will now delete the Windows system files and reinstall them again. Your programs won't be touched. The downside is that you will loose any service packs that are installed unless they are part of the install CD.

You could also try a reverse clone especially if this is a laptop - put the new drive int ot he PC and the old drive into an external caddy and clone from the external drive to the internal one.

No, it is not a laptop, and (for what it's worth) both drives are internally installed.

I'll try the Windows repair and see what happens...

Here's what I've tried so far...

Repaired Windows installation with a XP SP2 CD. No errors during this process, however, when it rebooted at the end, it froze at the black Windows XP logo screen with the text "Please wait..." Waited about two hours, then rebooted. Found a recommendation elsewhere to run a chkdsk /r from the recovery console to fix this situation, so I did that. Chkdsk reported finding and fixing errors on the drive.

Windows then started completely, and seemed to function normally, except: Outlook would not open my .pst file, and IE persistently gives a "Not enough memory" message, even though this is clearly not the case. Same result when I tried using Microsoft Update.

I re-repaired the Windows installation, as above, with the same result. Ran chkdsk again, also with the same result.

Thought maybe updating to SP3 would help, so I manually downloaded and ran the SP3 package. Update proceeded without errors, however it ended, after its reboot, by freezing at the same XP logo "Please wait..." screen.

Unfortunately for now I'm out of time and I'm going to have to revert back to booting from and using the original disk. Hopefully if you can give me any further recommendations I'll try starting the process over again.

Nathan,

The clue could lie in the fact you have both drives connected internally. Make sure you disconnect the old drive, and have the new drive connected to the same position. The BIOS automatically searches for a disk that is marked active Windows then attempts to boot, if the BIOS sees two active drives it may not hand over to the correct drive and Windows boot loader will not know which disk to load Windows from.

The PST problem might occur if XP has changed any of the system identifiers. When you get the time, try cloning again (it is always best to do this from the CD rather than from within Windows) and then disconnect the original drive before rebooting.

Does the Trial Version prohibit me from cloning from a boot disc?

Yes.
