Simple setup instructions

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image Home 2012. I have an external USB drive and a Sandisk USB memory stick. My pc now has Windows 7 Home Premium; I am in the process of setting this clean install up after a major crash with Vista, so other than the Win 7 setup there is not much added - only Firefox in fact - so a good time to setup True Image.

I want simple instructions to create a backup, on my external USB, and a bootable "File" on my memory stick. I will run a backup when I make major changes to my Win 7 setup. Note - I thought I had this in Vista but when it crashed I could not get the backup to restore.

Once I have this setup I will test by doing a complete restore.

If I have a crash I will then use the memory stick to boot and restore the system from the external USB drive.

I see that there is Getting started for 2013; I guess 2012 is similar but the 2013 looks daunting! How can I obtain simple instructions to achieve my aim?

I find the easiest way is to boot from the CD or Memory stick and use the bootable media to perform the backup. When restoring a system partition, it is always best to boot from the CD or Stick and perform the restore.

Attach the stick and Use the Create bootable media option to create a bootable memory stick (all prior contents destroyed on stick).
Then boot from the stick and perform the backup or restore.

Help along the left margin as well as the user manual and assorted links in my signature below.

2012 and 2013 are very similar in appearance and use.

Here is a pdf on how to backup using a prior version but 2012 or 2013 bootable CD would be similar.

Thank you.

I have made a backup to my external USB drive; a 58GB tib file - not verified as only a test; final backup will be. I have also created a bootable folder "Recovery Manager"on my memory stick.

I am doing something else so will not be testing till tomorrow but assume that if I reboot from the memory stick i.e in BIOS make that first boot option, it will let me select the *.tib file on my USB drive and restore my complete system from that?

When rebooting from the memory stick does it automatically look for the "Recovery Manager" folder?

Yes, it will automatically boot into an Acronis boot menu where you choose to go into Acronis or into Windows. Respond before 10 seconds or it will auto boot into Windows. When creating the boot stick, you can pre-select True Image and then check the timer and it will boot auto into TrueImage after the timed delay.

Having removed "Windows old" folder my C: drive has reduced to 27Gb. I then backed this up; backup 16GB.

However I asked for "Single Version scheme" which should have over written my last back up of 58GB. I now have K:\My backups\My partitions.tib this is the 58GB and My partitions(1).tib the newer 16GB file.

Could it be that because I did not use "Single Version scheme" for the first backup that this is not over written this iteration?

Should I manually delete My partitions.tib 58GB file? Will My partitions(1).tib 16GB file be over written if I continue to use "Single Version scheme"?

If a task is edited, it may not work or it may work after a few uses. At this point, I would suggest you let it run one more time and if not correct, then start a new task pointing to a new empty storage folder.

Understand that the program will not delete the old backup until after the task/program creates a new backup so you always need space for the temporary extra spare.

Not yet working as required.

Tried removing My Partitions.tib and My Partitions(1 & 2).tib from My backups. Still creates more My Partitions(*).tib i.e. My Partitions(3 & 4).tib

After My Partitions(4).tib i.e.created new folder K:\Acronis but even using this created My Partitions.tib then My Partitions(1-3).tib.(4 more backups) Note that each time I create a new backup dialog defaults to K:\My backups no way to save K:\Acronis; does not like other than My backups as folder??

It would appear that you have to make up your mind what backup system you will be using first time; you cannot change your mind later.

Would like to uninstall True Image then reinstall but fear that some config file will be left behind that will cause it to carry creating more My Partitions(*).tib without deleting the original??
