"cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" on backup validation. Home 2012

Thread needs solution

I had this all working just fine for several months. Daily incrementals.

Then, about a week ago, it started getting this error on the validation step. The backup completes, and every time, the validation fails. It makes little sense, and the only "other process" that could have the file open is Acronis itself.

Here is the log fragment showing this:

There is still plenty of space on the hard drive. Nothing at all was altered in Acronis - no settings have changed for a long time.

I've had this sort of frustrating experience with Acronis products for YEARS. Every version seems to have some kind of instability where it can't just continue running. I've used it on perhaps 6 different computers, and currently using it on two very different ones now. In each case, after running for some time with no problem, both systems start having problems completing. It always seems to be when there have been a significant number of incremental backups in the backup folder. Deleting ALL backups fixes it (and has been the "go to" solution for 5 years now), but this is unacceptable. The whole point of backups is to have older versions. Maybe you need to have testing occur for several months, and when it eventually fails, NOW you can debug it. But whatever it is, it has not gone away since Windows XP. It is something core in how you guys handle files.

Anyway, is there some fix OTHER than deleting everything?

Have you restarted your system lately? Restarting your system should correct this issue. Also you can try and manually validate the backups after restarting your system. The backup files are probably okay.

You can use a third party program to determine the reason for the files being locked. I use LockHunter available from here : http://lockhunter.com/download.htm
