[RESOLVED] Higher prices for Australia customers??

Thread needs solution

Hi, I just wanted to understand why the price is $39 for US customers and advertised as $39 in the emails we are sent to update yet when we go through to purchase the product it charges us AUD$49..

As our dollars are at parity and have been for a year I just want to understand why as an Australian customer I am charged 25% more to buy the software off your US based server, when you sent me an email saying I would be charged $39???

I am sorry to bring this up here but I think it is relevant to bring up in the forum as all Australian customers would be treated this way and an explanation would benefit us all..

Issue addressed here.

Joel,

I've just checked (I'm in Australia as well), the Australian site is reporting $39.99 and Cleverbridge are charging AU$39.99.

Sorry Colin I should have been more specific, I was reffering to the family pack which is AUD$49 for Australian customers or US$39 for American customers... (Though we all buy off the US store so no GST)..

AUD$39 is for the single user licence, though that is also US$29 for American customers?

OK solved if you go to the Aussie store but on the payment page select to be charged in US$ all the prices drop by (on average) 30%..

Also remember that banks charge for the currency differences, so while it might appear that the currencies are in parity your not accounting for the charge to convert from AUD to USD.

It might be multiple charges as well, one from your bank in Aussieland, and the other for the bank here in USAland

Current rates:
http://www.xe.com/

But I pay with paypal, they charge your CC in the local currency, the rate they give is slightly worse than the real exchange rate but I am still close to the US$10 better off by buying in US dollars considering the aussie dollar is higher than the US dollar at the moment (paypal's worse rates bring them back to parity)..

I am still deciding whether to upgrade though, I feel a bit put out paying for essentially nothing more than bug fixes and windows 8 support..

Perhaps they should have said consumer tax, that way it would cover both european VAT and AUS/NZ GST which are all very similar taxes with slight variations in implementation.

The price on the websites is fixed, it doesn't change with the exchange rate as Cleverbridges does if selecting currencies. It is no different to RS and Element-14 electronic component distributers who fix their exchange rate at the worst possible projection and then make that the Australian price for the life of the catalogue. In their case there are import, customs and transport costs to consider.

I have never understood completely why software companies with electronic downloads have such a price disparity around the world, but on the bright side at least $10 inc GST premium is not as great as a number of software providers I can think of - try buying a compiler or graphics programs.

They have an office here with a registered ABN, that complicates matters.

When I purchase my Microsoft Technet subscription, even though it comes from Singapore I have to pay GST on the subscription as Microsoft have a Microsoft Australia registered company and office.

As you've found that can be bypassed by purchasing from the US website for the moment and of course as it is under the current AU$1K threshold for private individuals GST is not declarable - if you were a business though, it needs to be paid.

However, I am not an accountant ot a tax lawyer, so I may be off kilter on the law.

Microchip used to charge GST that went straight into their pockets because no one had realised they hadn't set the system up correctly - they had set it up for Europe where VAT must be paid no matter where it is imported from.
