GFS backup scheme with two external HDs

Thread needs solution

Hi all.

I would like backup VMs to two removables HDs. I don't know if I can use GFS schema, but I think no.

Can anyone confirm this?

What backup type should I use?

Thank you in advance

Information: ESX5.0.0 and Acronis vmProtect 7.0 Agent (compilación 7.0.5173).

Hello Manel,

Thank you for posting your question in our forum.

Acronis vmProtect 7 does not support splitting backups over removable drives. However, you can write full backup on your external drives. GFS schema does not work in this situation.  You can reach your removable drive via MS Windows machine, where you attach the drives and create a network share in order to access this share from vmProtect.

Alternatively, you are using the vmProtect Agent for Windows on the Windows Machine directly in order to write then to the local drive.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide a better solution for your question. However, I have created a feature request for you about this feature.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Like Peter said, vmProtect is not aware of backups on different disks. You can use one GFS task, but it will behave like 2 separate tasks. An archive will be created on each disk and the cleanup rules will be applied to each archive separately. I was doing this for a while using 5 USB drives (Monday - Friday). I had it set to keep 1 Day, 4 week, 6 month. Basically you end up with multiple GFS backups, each containing slightly different date ranges.
