Missing SSD while using True Image recovery disk

Thread needs solution

The problem I am having with True Image 2013 is very odd, especially as I have also tried the free version of Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 and EaseUS Todo Backup Home v5, the software I currently use, and they both work perfectly.

The issue is this. While using the software in Windows 7 Ultimate the program works perfectly and it sees all 8 drives I have connected to the system, see attached picture one. However, and this is the odd bit, if I boot into the recovery disk it only see 5 drives, see picture two. I know why 2 are missing that’s because they are two 2TB drives in a NAS box but it refuses to accept the existence of my 240GB SSD. Both it and the 120GB SSD are connected to ports 1 and 0 respectively on the 6Gb/s ports of a Asus Maximus IV Extreme motherboard.

I do not understand why it happily sees the 120GB drive but not the 240GB. It cannot be an problem with the hardware as other drive backup solutions do not have an issue.

The reason I wanted to solve this mystery is I like the one feature of True Image that no other program seems to have and that is the nonstop backup option.

Help from anyone who can point me in the direction of a solution to this strange problem would be most gratefully accepted.

Is there any chance that the second SSD is not connected to the same drive controller. Often on Asus boards there are 2 disks controllers (for example 2 intel 6GB/s ports and 2 Marvell 6GB/s). Make sure that both SSD are on the same controller.

Hi Pat.

Thanks for replying to my cry for help.

I know they were but just to make sure the info I give you is correct I checked where
they are connected to the motherboard. The smaller SSD is in port 0 and the larger
missing SSD is in port 1. Both ports 0 and 1 and controlled by the Intel® P67(B3) chipset
and are coloured red. I also checked and the missing SSD is connected, no loose leads.
Anyway if there was a problem with the connection how do you explain why the other
two programs can see the 240GB SSD ok.

Any more thoughts, or should I just give up on this program. At the end of the day if
I cant use the recovery disk or indeed the F11 method to recover a backup this
program is no use to me. It's a big shame as I really what to make use of the non stop
backup feature of this program.

Thanks again Pat

Iain,

I have seen a problem posted here a while back concerning the Boot disk for 2012 (I think), having issues with two SSD drives that were identical and only being able to see one drive. (Seems similar to your results). As a simple test (even though this will not resolve your issue) if you disconnect the SSD that Acronis bootable Rescue Media can see, and then boot to the Rescue Media, does True Image then see the remaining SSD okay?

I personally use Acronis as well as the other products you have mentioned, and find that I now only use Acronis WinPE based Rescue Media that was created using the Plus Pack to provide greater driver support and compatibility with my hardware. I have had good results with the Linux based Acronis Rescue media, but it doesn't always meet my needs.

Evening James.

Done what you suggested and low and behold the 240GB SSD is no longer lost but is showing up while using the recovery disk. I must admit I am at a loss as to what is causing the problem. I was considering swapping the two drives around on the motherboard but I am not prepared to risk causing a problem in doing so. After reconnecting the 120GB SSD, the larger SSD disappeared again.
I am not happy mucking about with the hardware of my computer for what is obviously a software problem with True Image. All the other software I have tried work fine with all the drives both SSD and hard disk drive in their current position in the computer.
It looks like Acronis may be losing me as a prospective customer. Perhaps you as a “MVP” could pass on to the powers that be at Acronis details of this problem in the hope that they may know what is causing it and possibly help or perhaps in the future release a patch to correct it.

Iain,
I'm sorry that Acronis can not fit your needs, and I will be happy to pass this information along to Acronis.
Before you un-install Acronis there is a utility that you can access from the ? (help) icon. It is the system report.
If you could run that and saveit, and either PM me or post it here, I can get it to Acronis. It would be crucial to have the report from your system so they can track down what is going on with the SSD drives in your system.
If you choose not to do this, I would understand.

Hi James.

I have given some thought overnight to this problem and I do not think I am going to
pursue it any further. As you know there are many other backup solutions available to
me and all of them work both in an Windows environment and while using a recovery
CD.

When I started this thread I was hoping for a quick fix, something that I had overlooked
that another forum user from experience could correct.

I thank both you and Pat for replying and trying to help solve what still seams a very
strange and to be honest stupid problem. I have spent to much time getting my system
to the state it's in now and I do not want to start fiddling with it.

I will keep monitoring this forum in the hope that perhaps one day someone with the
same problem as this will mention what they did to put in right.

Regards

Iain.
