Upgrading from ATI12 to ATI13

Thread needs solution

I have a registered copy of ATI12 running on my W7 Pro x64 system, I don't use Startup Recovery Manager, I do have some images from ATI12 in a Secure Zone on my second HDD (D:). I have created a recovery DVD.
using ATI12. I also have daily backups (full plus incremental) going back 5 months or so.

I've now purchased a full (not upgrade) copy of ATI13, and have the new registration code for it.

Can I just install this over the top of ATI12, or do I need to uninstall ATI12 first?

Either way will this preserve (a) my secure zone and images, (b) my backup profile, (c) my backups (or will I need to recreate the profile under ATI13 and start a new set of backups)?

I then plan to use my old ATI12 on my wifes new W7 Home x64 PC (with it's registration code), which I assume is OK. I will create new recovery DVDs for both systems.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
David

I think it's safest to uninstall old versions first.

1. Use the Acronis True Image 2013 bootable Rescue Media to make a full disk mode backup.
2. Turn off or disable Startup Recovery Manager or Secure Zone, if you had them.
3. Uninstall 2012.
4. Run Acronis True Image Cleanup Utility for 2011-2013: http://kb.acronis.com/content/34876
Be careful to follow all instructions, including not allowing the utility to reboot until you've made the Registry edits.
5. Reboot
6. Install 2013.

It's best to create new backup tasks.

Yes, you could of course use ATI2012 on the other PC, as you purchased a full (not upgrade) licence for 2013.

Thanks Tuttle,

I assume that in step 1 you meant use 2012 to make a full disk backup, as at that stage I don't have 2013 installed to make a Rescue CD?

The instructions for the Clean Up Utility imply that the 2012 created secure zone and anything in it will be deleted.

Will any disk images that I have made in 2012 be usable with 2013 in case I need to recover to the 2012 state?

No, I meant what I wrote. You may login at Acronis.com, if you registered your product, and download the bootable Rescue Media ISO.

Follow the instructions on the cleanup page, which I believe advise you to first remove the Secure Zone.

2013 can restore 2012 images.

Idealy the answer is to copy the files out of the Secure Zone to another disk and then follow Tuttles idea. However, if this is not possible then installing over the top of 2012 should in theory work. Experience has shown though that for as many people who do this and have no problems half as many again do incur problems that can only be resolved by following the steps Tuttle outlined.

Hence the reason why most of us advise doing it in the first place. :)

OK, used the ATIH2013 Boot CD to save an image of bot C: and the boot partition, seemed to work ok.

Before proceeding I'd like to save a couple of the disk images from the 2012 secure zone (one is an image of the original build of the PC, the other is the original build plus core apps - either could save a complete rebuild if it ever become necessary).

How do I save these disk images from the secure zone. They don't display in Windows Explorer as TIB files, just disks that can be mounted. If I mount them they then just show the original folder/files, not as a restorable image.

Confused of UK!

David,

You need to copy the images out of the SZ. You may or may not need to append the tib suffix to them, I don't have a SZ set up at the moment so I'm going from memory.

Don't worry about not being able to recover anything but files or folders when mounted as this is normal, you can't 'recover' an image while you have it mounted.

Still can't see how to copy them from the SZ. In Windows Explorer COPY is greyed out in both menu bar and right-click dropdown.

Anyone?

David,
You have to use the move backup command from within ATI.

I have been using ATIH2012 - simply for disk backups no other functions enabled.

  1. Bought and tried to in-place install ATI2013 (I upgraded my old Adaptec RAID card to a 7805 - which is not recognised by the Linux rescue ISO, so needed a WinPE solution) Windows explorer would load, but little else. Task manager would stall after a few keystrokes
  2. Spent many, many hours getting a clean uninstall of ATIH2012 (i.e. one that would boot cleanly) and trying variants of ATI2013 install. Finally got it to install by disabling all non-microsoft services and startups using msconfig in safe mode. However, the "clean" installed ATI2013 responded just the same as above...
  3. So back to system restore / rebuild ATIH2012 backups

I have been in contact through tech support. They are offering no ideas except "contact online support and they will guide you through the install process". So I'm looking for anyone with a similar experience in terms of problems with ATI2013 install and then of course what helped them out of the hole.

ANY relevant advice appreciated.

OK, so how do you move an image that's saved in the SZ - I can't see how it's done, can you point me in the right direction please.

Re Roderick Laird's Post - ffs!!!!
I can't afford the time or risk of getting into all this hassle, maybe I should just keep 2012 on my existing system and put 2013 onto my wife's new system when it arrives. All I want is to run a daily backup schedule for my data files, plus save and restore a disk image if the need should ever arise. How hard can it be!! Maybe Acronis is just too complex for a "normal user".

David,

To move an archive, highlight the task, right click, select more, select move; an explorer form will pop up allowing you to select the new destination.

OK, finally manged to move all the existing images and deleted the SZ. (I couldn't move the latest image created by 2013, even in safe mode, it's locked by something or other, but it wasn't in the SZ so maybe this doesn't matter).

Before uninstalling 2012 I want to make a note of the folder/file backup profile that I run (scheduled, monthly full plus daily incrementals) every day, in particular the folder and file selections that I originally defined. I've exported the backup settings via the Tools and Utilities screen in 2012, but I can't find anywhere to view what the settings are in case things go pear shaped and I need to set up the backups from scratch in 2013.

Is there somewhere I can view this info, short of going through one of the old full backups and deciphering what folders/files have been saved?

The exported settings should be in XML format, just open them in either a text editor/XML viewer or your browser to see the contents.

Had a look in the exported files
(list of files in the zip created by 2012):

backupfile.cfg
backupimage.cfg
backupmail.cfg
restorefile.cfg
restoreimage.cfg
restoremail.cfg
scheduling.cfg

pretty unhelpful, and doesn't contain any info about what files/folders are included in any backup profile, so seems I can't rely on these to just import the profile into 2013 when (if) I eventually install it!

Has anyone received an answer why the exported settings files do NOT contain any readable information about what files/folders are included?

True Image uses a binary database, corporate products use XML and SQL.

Ah, that explains it. A proprietary binary database is of course uneditable by the user and renders it impossible to modify exported backup settings (including folders and files).

Why do I want to do this?

Because ATIH2013 will not save my selections for backup source folders (i.e., as checked or unchecked), and I am at a loss to figure out how else to get around this

Robert,

I wanted the exported settings so that I could import them into a new PC, not to read or edit them. In the end I just re input the backup settings manually.

However, I do select just the folders/files I want backed up, and this seems to work ok. I've checked the backups themselves, by using the restore function in ATI13 to view them, but not actually do the restore, and only the folder/files that I expect to be there are there. I don't understand why this doesn't work for you.

At the moment my back is scheduled for once a day, on a 30 day full + incremental cycle, and after 7 months it's already 300Gb total disk space. One day soon I really must try a full restore to check that the thing does actually work properly, no point in having backups only to find that they don't work when you really need them!!
