Norton 360 V3 backup compatibilty issues with ATI 2010
I am running ATI 2010 build 5021 and Norton 360 V3 on Vista 64.
I was hoping to be able to use the Norton 360 Online backup facility to suppliment full and incemental backups under ATI but I have found that Norton 360 V3 backup no longer works:
All backups complete as cancelled
The backup tab in file properties no longer appears
The Norton 360 options on file right mouse are greyed out
Norton backup overlays are not updated
I wanted to find out if the products are fundamentally incompatible and what the options are.
As I see it I could:
Remove Acronis and use something else for system backups - but what is compatible with Norton 360.
Remove Norton 360 and use another solution such as Norton Internet Security in the hope that this is compatible with Acronis.
Use Acronis online backups and turn off the Norton 360 backups (hoping that Norton 360 does not stop Acronis Online backups working
It would be good to understand what should work - I have already posted on the Norton forums

Dmitry:
You state that "It’s true that Acronis True Image programs are incompatible with Norton Symantec software."
1. I simply don't believe this, I use both with no issues. When I switched from BitDefender to Norton IS 2009 I suddenly had many fewer problems with my computer, NIS 2009 (and 2010) is the best and easiest security software I have ever installed on my machines.
2. If you are actually correct then either TI, or Norton, is poorly written software that should be fixed asap.
If compatibility problems force a user to abandon a useful software, that user will examine the issues and make an educated decision as to which to replace. Should that user replace a software that installed very quickly, runs great, and never requires the user to search for help, or should they replace the software that is constantly a problem?

Hello Martin and Fungus,
First of all, please accept my apologies for my colleague Dmitry, he was wrong. There are some known compatibility issues with Symantec software, but they are affect only Norton GoBack.
Martin, if you want us to investigate the issue please gather the following information and attach it to your reply:
- Please collect additional information by the means of AcronisInfo utility;
- Please make DeviceTree screenshots:
- Download and unpack the Device Tree application;
- Run the application from "i386" folder (run the 64-bit version of Device tree from "x64" folder if you have Windows Vista 64-bit);
- Completely unfold (click on all plus signs) the \Driver\partmgr and \Driver\volmgr branches;
- Move the margin to the right in order to see all the items;
- Make a screen shot and attach it to your reply.
I'm looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

Hi Ilya
I have major compatibility issues between Norton Internet Security 2010 and using Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Plus pack when using the Nonstop backup facility.
When running Nonstop the system will hang for many minutes.
In the event log I had many messages saying either:
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SysMain service.
OR
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.
By tuning off Nonstop backup the system seems ok again, but Nonstop backup was one of my main reasons for buying this version.
Attached are the Device Tree logs you requested in the previous message.

I started using Norton products back they were just a side job for Peter Norton who was still consulting and writing magazine columns. After Peter sold the company and Symantec took over, things changed.
It go to where I had so many compatiblitiy issues with Norton Security products that I exorcised them all from all of my machines a few years ago and never looked back. And the support? Oy Veh!
Basically, I treat Norton like a virus and have found my machines to be generally healthier for this. If I get a new machine that has any Norton stuff preinstalled, part of my set up routine is to remove the norton progs. This usually requires a good tool like jv-powertools or other similar system mangemetn prog as Norton stuff is usually designed so that it can't entirely remove itself. Part of this pernicious behavor is the copy protection stuff built into Norton; it's partly the way Norton wants to get down deep and own your machine (so to speak), and partly messy programming on Symantec's part -- Norton is infamous for leaving tons of registry stuff behind when you do an normal uninstall. So, like a virus, best thing is to not let it on your machine in the first place, and if it does get on, minimize it's activity until you can do a scrub.
If you reallywant to keep the Norton stuff, then work with the Acronis staff to track down the compatibility issues -- it will be slow work -- but just try and see if the Norton folks will be much help in this regard! They don't even have a forum! Symantec closed it down due to all the of the dissatisfied posters.
