Backup to SanDisk Glide 32GB Drive

Thread needs solution

Anyone know why I can't use Acronis True Image 2013 to backup to a SanDisk Glide 32GB flash drive? I have no trouble with Kingston and Maxell flash drives, but the SanDisk will backup from 75-250 GB and then will not be recognized by Windows. After the backup is aborted, running "properties" on the disk shows 0 used and 0 free. Removing and reinserting the drive brings up Checkdisk which offers to "scan and Fix". It sometimes completes and sometimes doesn't. When it completes it will show whatever was backed up by Acronis (usually less than 10% of the intended backup) but will not be recognized by Acronis. I have tried this over twenty times using different USB connections and always get the same results.

SanDisk has supplied me with two different drives that won't work and is now sending me a third that probably won't work. They have no suggestions but want to solve the problem by just sending another drive. The drive will backup single files and folders on other computers Win XP and Win 7 32 bit, but I don't have Acronis on either of them. Also I can usually backup individual files and folders on my current equipment, but Acronis backup just won't complete.

I am using a relatively new Del1 XPS 8300 with Win 7 Professional 64 bit, an intel i7 processor, 12G RAM and 1TB hard drive. I'll repeat. The Kingston and Maxell drives work fine.

Thanks for any ideas. (I know I could just quit using SanDisk and probably will, but I'd like to solve the problem.) I have attached screen shots to try to explain the situation.

Not sure why.

Did you try to CLEAN the flash drive using DISKPART?

No, but these are both brand new drives. I'll check to see if DISKPART will work in WIN 7.

Thanks.

Richard,
Do you have another brand you could try?

If your problem stick is the one with the Cruzer setup whereby you boot and run other program, this type stick may be an issue but that is only a guess on my part.

Both Kingston and Maxell USB drives work fine. As far as I know there is no Cruzer setup.

If your Glide model is the same as described here, then the U3 Cruzer may be involved.

SanDisk does provide a program which will remove that feature from the disk but am not usre whether all features removed.

Have you considered deleting the partitons and reformat with NTFS--if the stick is gong to be used for storage only.

In my XP Pro system, my u3 Cruzer does show as accessible to be backed up and accessible as a target. The problem is that I have had the stick for a while and may have deleted and reformatted--just not sure of what maintenance I may have performed. It is NTFS currently.

Yes, I've reformatted several times, both with FAT32 and NTFS. Always have the same problem. All SanDisk programs were removed early on.

After further testing, these are indicators which have appeared.
Test drive=16gb SandDisk Cruzer U3 which shows as two partitions with two drive letters.

In factory condition, it shows in Windows Explorer as 2 partitions--both lettered but only one usable which is the storage piece. True for both Win7 and XP Pro.

I used both Windows and a partitioning tool to delete the partitions and reformat but the both partitions reappeared after format. I also used the TI Add Disk option but both partitions reappeared after format.

Therefor, I used the Sandisk provided removal tool using the option for permanent deletion--never to be used as U3. After the corrective action by the Sandisk removal tool, the program advised the drive had been converted to a standard usb drive.

The drive was then formatted via San Disk as a FAT32 device and appeared in Windows and TrueImage. I then re-formatted as NTFS and it likewise appeared in Windows explorer and TrueImage--both as a single lettered partition.

The revised 16gb tool appeared in TrueImage 2013 (Win7 & XP) as being available to be imaged or to be used as a storage device.

As my testing differs from your experince, perhaps you would consider performing the same recovery action on the drive. Maybe it will work for you as well. Good luck.

Thanks, Grover. My drive appeared to have only a single lettered partition, which I permanently changed to "I". As far as I know it had only one partition.

I tried the removal tool as you suggested, but since the Sandisk programs had already been deleted and the drive reformatted several times, the tool could not find a U3 drive. Sandisk is sending me a replacement drive, but they are out of the Cruzer Glide drives, so it will be a Cruzer SDCZ36 listed simply as a "Cruzer USB Flash Drice", which I hope will work. If not, the first thing I will do will be to run the removal tool on it. I don't know why Sandisk did not tell me about the removal tool when I first notified them.

UPDATE

Well, Grover my new SanDisk 32GB came yesteday (which does not appear to be a U3 drive) and has the same problem. I first deleted all the SanDisk software and tried to reformat the drive. After about 10 minutes I got a message saying that Windows could not complete the format. After that the drive showed "full." But Checkdisk fixed that after I removed and reinserted the drive, but I never could backup more than 200 KB before Acronis could not find any more files. A simple Windows "Copy" of a 1,732 file 3.2 GB only copied 394 files (61 MB) before quitting the first time. The second time only 98 files (29 MB) were copied. Several more attempts were made with about the same results.

I've sent this information to SanDisk. I hope they will look into the problem more thoroughly, if nothing else just to save their reputation as my Kingston and Maxell zip drives work fine.

Thanks again for your previous suggestions. If SanDisk solves the problem I'll let you know so you can help some other poor soul.

Richard,
I wish I had a positive answer for you--but I don't.

I did buy a PNY 32GB Micro Attache Flash Drive from Walmart fior $19 and had no issues with it (although it does run warm)..
It was a Fat32 and seen as either a source or destination. It showed as a removable disk and the free space etc appeared in Explorer. This was via a Windows 7 -64 system.

I would be curious if you would boot into the TI Recovery CD and see if the SanDisk is recognized via the CD.

if this were my system, I would uninstall, run the cleanup utility, run a reg cleaner and reinstall but not sure this would be a fix.

I booted from the Acronis Recovery Disk and had the same problem. It's not just Acronis where I have the problem. I can't even do a simple Windows copy of more than about 25 MB when it will shut down at random points (never shuts down at the same place on identical data copies) and then show 0 bytes free space even though the SanDisk has less than 25 MB on it. Checkdisk will then ressurect it and the correct Properties will be shown.

I have copied files to the SanDisk from my son's computer (Win 7 64 bit, but much smaller processor and half the RAM) and it seems to work fine. His computer doesn't have Acronis, so I can't check TI. There must be some incompatibility between my computer and the Sandisk. I think I'll stick with Kingston and Maxell unless SanDisk comes up with a solution.

I lost my data stored in memory card and was worried about it recovery. Then one of my friend suggested me about using sandisk recovery software. I started using then. You could not believe it really works. I had retrieve all of my lost data from it. I recommend you to atleast try once and feel the difference.

Thank you Allen for the update.
