Struggles with Windows 8, Secure Boot etc and ATI 2013 boot disk
I'm trying to use a ATI product to image (boot time) my new Samsung laptop with Windows 8 on it. Here are the scenarios:
ATI 2011 Build 6942 boot disk:
Will not boot with Secure Boot enabled in BIOS. The laptop behaves as if the ATI 2011 boot CD is not bootable, gives me no message and boots into Windows 8.
With Secure boot disabled, OS mode selection = "UEFI and CSM", ATI 2011 will boot but ATI does not see my laptop hard disk. It only sees the USB drive attached to the laptop (that I want to be the image destination, not source).
ATI 2013 Build 5551 Trial boot disk:
Will not boot with secure boot. I get a message from the BIOS saying "Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED* Press any key to continue". On doing so, the laptop boots into Windows 8.
With secure boot disabled, OS mode selection = "UEFI and CSM, ATI 2013 will boot and the UEFI loader will give me 3 choices:
1. True Image
2. Acronis Software Report
3. Continue booting
Both options 1 and 2 results in the Acronis logo with "Loading, Please wait" below it forever. The boot process gets stuck at that logo+message on a black screen.
Disk Management in windows 8 shows the following partitions (in sequence from left to right) on my hard drive: Disk 0, Basic, 465.4 GB, Online
500 MB, Healthy (Recovery partition
300 MB, Healthy, EFI System partition
(C:), 440.70 GB NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Pagefile, Crash dump, Primary boot)
23.1 GB, Healthy (Recovery partition)
1.00 GB, Healthy (Recovery partition)
Please help. I want to use some 3rd party software at boot time to image my hard drive. Imaging built into Windows 8 GUI won't work (long story).
How should I proceed?

Aloke,
In addition to disabling Secure Boot, try switching the UEFI to Legacy mode - once you've finished using the recovery environment you will need to switch the BIOS back to its original configuration.
What brand and model is your laptop?

Thanks Pat and Colin.
This is a Samsung 3 series 300E5C-A08 that comes with Windows 8.
The choices available in the BIOS once I disable Secure boot are: "UEFI", "CSM", "UEFI and CSM"
I have been using "UEFI and CSM" as that allows both types of OS.
Will I have to install ATI2013 and Plus Pack to my PC to create the special Plus-pack-aware Boot-time backup/restore CD? Is there a trial version of Plus Pack?
So far, I have directly downloaded the Boot-CD ISO from the https://www.acronis.com/my/products/ area after I login to the Acronis Support site.
I don't mind upgrading my ATI 2011 provided I can be sure that the eventual boot-CD will work.
Note that ATI 2013 boot-CD seems to be loading a UEFI OS from the boot-CD. Besides, the BIOS is letting the laptop boot up from the ATI 2013 boot CD, but ATI run subsequently is locking up.

PS: I just purchased ATI2013+PlusPack upgrade for $20. Not bad. Now, I need to make the boot-time backup work!!!

Question about the boot-CD with and without Plus Pack:
Is the ISO for ATI2013 without plus pack https://www.acronis.com/my/download/?ATIH2013_en-US.iso
different from the ISO with Plus Pack https://www.acronis.com/my/download/?ATIH2013PP_en-US.iso ?
Is the ATIH2013PP_en-US.iso include the Plus Pack code? They are both 301 MB.
I only use boot time ATI and I would rather avoid having to install the full program on my PC. I just need a working boot-CD from ATI.
Aloke
PS: I downloaded both ISO files and they both are exactly (315,621,376 bytes) in size.. So they are probably the same file.
How do I make a boot disk that has the Plus Pack in it?

Yes, the 2 are different. The ISO with the PP has the Universal Restore feature activated. This activation doesn't change the size of the ISO.
The benefit of installing ATI and the Plus Pack is to be able to create a WinPE based disk. This might be necessary if the standard Linux-based ISO w/PP doesn't recognize your hardware.

Thanks Pat.
So, if I have downloaded the ATIH2013PP_en-US.iso (after purchasing ATI2013+PP), will I need to install the 2 products? Or should I just burn the ATIH2013PP_en-US.iso and use that?

Never mind. Here's an update. ATI_2013_PP works!!
I made 2 changes:
1. I used the ISO for ATI2013PlusPack to create the boot CD.
2. I disabled Secure Boot and set the OS to CSM (not "UEFI and CSM")
Now ATI boots from the and creates an image. I haven't tested any restores.. and hopefully, will never have to.
Thanks everyone.

Since you used the recovery CD to backup, you should be fine. I would still try to restore a couple of files from that backup, just to make sure.

Is there a utility to restore a few files from the backup file without having to install the full ATI2013PP software on my PC?
I have always used just boot-time backup/restores. I don't intend to use the Windows GUI ATI software.

Yes. YOu can boot on the recover CD, go to the home tab, choose recover files and folder, select your disk and partition backup.
