Ubuntu 12.04 support

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have been using my copy of Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Workstation Standard + Universal Restore on Windows 7.

I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot on the same physical machine on a separate disk, using the ext4 file system on two partitions.

Is Acronis Backup and Recovery certified for Ubuntu 12.04? Would it create backups of the entire disk ignoring free space just like in Windows? I have not seen version 12.04 of Ubuntu mentioned explicitly in the docs.

Would I need to purchase an additional copy for Ubuntu in my dual boot situation?

Finally, Is it possible to use my Windows version to back up my separate dual boot hard drive that I am using for Ubuntu 12.04 (with ext4 partitions) just normally? Or are there special instructions for this type of backup, if at all possible?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Azad,

Are you talking about imaging the Ubunto partition from within Windows or about the ABR for Linux server program?

ext4 filesystem is supported, and you will be able to run the product within Windows and create backup of your Ubuntu disk, and free space will not be backed up. However if some of those partitions are created using LVM, they can be backed from Windows only in sector-by-sector mode, and in this case only linux-based bootable media will be able to work with them not backing up free space.

Sorry I am not familiar with the abbreviation ABR. I assume the BR stands for boot record.

Ideally, I'd like a simple way to take an image of the boot partition as well as two ext4 partitions (root and home) used for my Ubuntu Linux instance, for later recovery. dev-anon indicates that I can do this from the dual-booted Windows instance for my ext4 partitions. Not sure about the boot partition. But that is less of an issue: it can always be recreated easily.

But if the Ubuntu instance were not dual booted but existed on its own machine, I guess I would have to purchase a Linux license for Acronis. I am assuming that I can then take an image of the entire disk with all the partitions under Ubuntu 12.04 with free space ignored just as dev-anon has described. Yes?

Many thanks.

Many thanks for your reply dev-anon. I did not use LVM to create my partitions. Just the normal vanilla Ubuntu installation process. So I will try the approach of backing up the Linux disk from the dual-booted Windows instance, that you confirmed is workable.

Thanks again.

ABR = Acronis Backup and Recovery, as in ABR 11.5.
