Recover backup to another drive on the PC

Thread needs solution

My backups are stored on a external hard drive. When I made the backups the drive was called (R drive). And the place where the backup came from in my PC was harddrive with the letter (I). Now after a few months I want to place the backup back on my PC but at a different location, for example drive with letter D.

Now I am facing two problems. Acronis can’t find the backup on the external disk because the driveletter was changed. In these few months I have placed two new harddrives and on thes harddrives are now the old driveletters that were used are connected to another harddrive. And the second problem is that Acronis can’t place the backup back because of the same reason.

Question, can I place backups randomly everywhere on the PC or is this impossible?

Please help me.

You should not change the location of the backups manually, or ATI in Windows will lose track of them, and when you continue doing backups (in Windows) the internal database of ATI will will wrong, and that, in turn, will create issues with chain coherence, validation and restore.
You can use the Move command of ATI to move backups around, but it is much better to start new tasks when you want to change anything in backup name, destination, scheme and retention rules.

Now, if you want to do a restore of a disk and partition backup, you have to do that operation from the recovery CD anyway and at that point the internal database doesn't really matter IF the chains have not been corrupted before. To be clear, you could, before you do your recovery, move manually all the necessary backup files (see note below) to another location, then boot the computer on the recovery CD, and restore the backup from the moved files. Then, when you start using ATI again to backup, create a new task.

NB: finding all the necessary files for recovery manually is easy when you didn't edit tasks, changed names or location. It can become harder if you edited the tasks since TIB files with different names and location can be part of a set of files necessary for recovery.

I am not talking abaut replacing a backup of a drive, partition or even Windows. No I want to replace a backup on another location of some maps and files, not complete drives or even the systemdrive (C)!

Rob,

If you have the drive where these files are attached, just get True Image to rescan for existing backups, once listed you can then use TI to move the archive/files to another place.

Is it not possible for you to temporarily change the drive letter back to its original character?

It is not possible form me to change driveletters, because on the new PC this driveletter does not exist. It was driveletter I but now it does not go further than letter E.

The existing backups of the maps and files are found on my external harddrive, but how can I put them back tot drive E in stead of I. The programm says it is the wrong drive!

Rob

Rob,

Could you please show some screen shots of what you are seeing in True Image, where it says it is the wrong drive.

You should be getting an option to restore to the same place or somewhere else. Is this a files an dfolders backup or a partition image?

You can alter drive letters in Windows Disk Management.

I'll try to explain. On my external drive (Maxtor (U:) are the backupped files I want tot restore.

Not Windows files so I would not need to use the rescueCD!!

But I have made the backup some months ago from the I drive tot the Maxtor. But now I want tot give the backup a new place to go, The drive (Modelspoor (R:)

But as the image shows, I can only use the I drive says Acronis. I can't choose another drive.

Rob
