Does not continue after restart

Thread needs solution

Hi
Sony asked me to restore my new Sony Vaio Duo11 (64 bit) to diagnose a "leaping mouse" problem.

Before doing so, I backed up all partitions. Long story short - the leaping mouse problem did not go away and now I need to reinstate my machine from my backup.

All goes Ok until I get the message "need to restart to continue" I click Ok but after the restart nothing happens.

Please help.

Thanks, Mark.

Hi
I just re-read what I wrote and when I say "nothing happens" what I should have said is Windows8 Pro does restart but Acronis doesn't start.
Thanks for any assistance, Mark.

YOu need to create an Acronis recovery CD. You can do that from Windows using ATI (ACronis True Image) or you can download your bootable ISO from your Acronis.com account, after you have registered your serial number there.
Since you probably have UEFI boot on your laptop, you will need to boot the laptop, press F2 repeatedly to get into the BIOS. There you will need to enable legacy boot (you might have to disable secure boot and UEFI boot to do that, depending on your bios). Then make sure the BIOS is setup to boot on the CD/USB Flash drive of your recovery medium, reboot.
ACronis should run now. Do your recovery.
After the recovery, reset your BIOS to UEFI with secure boot before booting into Windows.

Hi
The Sony Vaio DUO11 is Sony's new touch-screen that doesn't have a CD. How do I do the above from an external drive or from a USB drive?
Thanks, Mark.

From Windows, using ATI, you can create a bootable USB disk.
If you have the bootable ISO, you can boot directly into the ISO by using, for example, GRUB4DOS.

Hi
From Windows using ATI 2013 I successfully created a bootable USB disk.
However after setting BIOS to external/usb as top boot priority on booting with the USB disk it gives an error saying invalid operating system.
I also tried to figure out how to use GRUB4DOS but it's way over my head.
How should I proceed?
Thanks, Mark.

I am thinking you are seeing an error message because secure boot is still enabled.

Check your BIOS settings, did you disable secure boot? Did you disable UEFI? did you enable legacy boot?
On some computers (eg Dell) you need to disable secure boot, then UEFI, then enable legacy boot.
On some others (eg Lenovo) you need to enable legacy boot only.

Hi
That was it! Secure boot was still enabled.
Woohoo! What a relief to get my data back :-)
Many thanks, Mark.

There is now a patch for secure boot when using the recovery CD.

You will need to burn a new CD.

Many thanks. I'm delighted - the restore worked perfectly after the fixes you suggested. Thanks, Mark.
