Hard drive size proiblem?

Thread needs solution

My computer had a 500 GB hard drive and I made a backup. Then a 2 TB drive was installed and the backup was restored to it. At the end there were warnings about PCI drivers not being found. The restored systen will boot and will work, but Windows Update will not function. It givea a message that it cannot start and says a reboot may be neeeded.. However, the system reports that it is started. A reboot does not help.

This is probably due to moving your system to an Advanced Format (AF) hard disk.
There are steps to correct this, but more information is needed to provide assistance.
What OS are you running?
Can you provide a screen capture or your installed programs (from Add/Remove) programs?
What kind of system do you have? Manufacturer/Model/etc.
Did you apply any Microsoft HotFixes to address this issue before the backup?

I can provide guidance here if you can provide at least the information requested above.

I am running 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion a6742p. I did run Microsoft fixit and it claimed to fix a couple of items related to Windows Update. The 2 TB hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar Green. I can place the origimal hard drive in an eSata Dock and boot from it. Windows Update still works on it.

Please check to see if you have one of the following products installed:

Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager - Does not support AF drives (in my experience).

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) - Newest versions support AF drives correctly.

If you have the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager installed - un-install it and do not install another version of it.

If you have Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) installed - go to Intel's website and download both the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (you should run this utility even if you had the Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed, after removing it.) and the most current Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) v 11.7.0.1013. Run the Chipset utility first, and then the IRST software.

If you had the older Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed, after running the Intel Chipset Installation Utility, you can/should attempt to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver, and it will either complain that it does not support your hardware, or will install correctly.

Also take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018 (Install this Hotfix, if not already installed).

Especially useful is the information about "fsutil "

James,

I foillowed the suggestions including kb848035 and still have not had success. In attempting to install the fix an error message similar to the one about Windows Update occurred. I have decided to use two smaller hard drives rather than the 2TB drive. Several web searches seem to indicate that many others have have the problem.
