TI Home 2011 - Windows XP SP3 - Explorer Hangs

Thread needs solution

I'm a long time True Image user. Though until recently my primary usage has been for migrating systems from one drive to another or doing offline backups. Fairly recently, I decided to actually put it to use on our kids' PC. I figured the live continual backups would be just the thing to help recover the system when something went wrong.

Since installing the system for them I've had periodic reports of the system being unstable. After removing the backup drive (second internal drive) and the system operating fine, I though for sure I'd found the problem. So, I replaced the backup drive with another and the problem returned. After some further digging I found that the problem immediately and reliably surfaced if I kicked off a backup. As long as True Image is not running on the system, it's stable and responsive.

A little digging in the forums here revealed other users reporting the same problems, but with Home 2013:

As I only have Home 2011, is there any hope of resolving this without having to purchase an upgrade that I don't otherwise need?

The fix discussed for 2013 is, of course only for 2013, and there will be no updates for 2011. I have used 2011 on an XP system and didn't seem to have these issues. I would suggest a couple of things for you to try.

First be sure you have the latest (last) copy of 2011 installed. It should be 2011 build 6942. If you are running an earlier build, you can download the 2011 build 6942 installer from your Acronis account. If you don't have one or have not registered your 2011 serial number, do so to get access to the 2011 build 6942 installer and download it.

If you have or downloaded the 2011 build 6942 installer, start the installer and choose "repair installation". Be sure to reboot the system after the "repair installation" finishes. Then test for the problems you have been experiencing.

If this doesn't help, you could do an un-install of 2011, run the 2013-2011 cleanup utility http://kb.acronis.com/content/34876, and then install 2011 again to see if this helps. If you still have problems, then there may not be another option for you with 2011.

It's the latest build, just removed and reinstalled it today (allowing it to download the latest build). I'm loathe to remove it only to reinstall it yet again. For now I've disabled the services referenced in the other threads, disabled the context menus, and renamed the proxy DLL. Hopefully this at least mitigates the hangs. I've also started looking for another backup solution, very sad to find that after paying for 3 upgrades I find myself with effectively broken software and little hope of a vendor provided fix without shelling out more money.

I understand your position on this issue completely.

I found that v11 (version previous to 2009) worked better than 2011 on my XP systems.
