TI Home 2010 & Restore Problem. Share my experience

Thread needs solution

I was upgrading the hard drive in my HP dv2500/dv2620 laptop today. I installed the new drive and booted off the True Image Rescue Media (v5055? I think). No problem starting the restore but at various points during the restore I would come back and my computer would be turned off. Not in sleep mode but off! This happened 3 or 4 times and I was getting ticked off at True Image thinking it was the problem. I noticed that the laptop was VERY hot...hotter than I have ever felt it. As a long shot I took the computer outside (+6 degC today) and started the restore. To my surprise it restored fine on the first attempt. Sorry True Image, I owe you an apology. It appears that an overheating had me fooled.

Just wanted to share.

Hello WP,

Thank you for taking time to contact us and for sharing your experience.

I would suggest you to check processor and video card coolers, the most probable reason of overheating is cooler malfunction. If you don’t know how to do it just contact the nearest computer service center.

Should you have questions about Acronis software or just a comment in future, reply us back we will be glad to assist you. Have a good day.

Thank You.

Hmm...Maybe time to get a can of compressed air and back blow out all of the laptop's cooling fans and heat sink fins? Also feel the air vents for any fans which are dead (not turning) while the system is under heavy load. If you have pets, especially cats who like to lay around your laptop on your desk, you probably will need some narrow tweezers to pull built-up "fur balls" out of the fans and cooling fins.

Also, of course, select in Acronis to do the restore at a much slower speed (set HD write speed to a slower speed) and set the restore process to use low priority. And finally, prop that laptop up atop a few books such that there is plenty of air space underneath its bottom side (if any) air vents. Maybe that will help too.
