I'm trying to restore an Acronis backup to Vmware ESXi 4.1.0 Free edition but I'm encountering an licensing error as you can see below. The answer I would like to know is this error caused because ESXi is the free edition? If it was a paid ESXi server, would this recovery process work? I'm using a test box at the moment which is why I'm getting these errors.

Now the problem is not with free edition of ESX (yet), but with lack of licenses - restoring a requres Virtual Edition license assigned to virtualization host. In case of free ESXi restore operation will fail later, because agent-less operations with free ESXi (backup as well as restore) are impossible.

I do have a legit licence for Virtual Edition so I guess the recovery isn't possible because of free ESXi. Besides recovering through agent-less operation, is there any other way to recover a backup to a ESXi host then?

Maybe you have a legit license, but the error you have is about licensing. The error you get when you hit free ESXi limitations is more cryptic. As Virtual Edition includes Universla Restore component, it's possible to boot from bootable media and supply drivers from Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Universal Restore\DriversPack
