Server Freezes during backup with B&R 10
Hello!
I have a bigger problem with a server at a customers production site after the reneval of the RAID-System. The system freezes during backup-process to tape or usb-disks. Internal Backup from one drive to another at the RAID-controller seems to work fine.
Last weekend I moved the hole system (two RAID 1 drives / C: for System and D: for Data)
to a new RAID-Controller Adaptec 6405 with 1 TB SAS-HDDs. The old controller was an Adaptec 2420 SA with four 73 GB WD Raptor SATA drives. I installed the new controller at the server, installed the driver for it on my Windows 2003 R2 Server (32 bit). Then I made a full backup to an USB-Disk an recovered the backup to the new 1TB drives at the new controller. The ueage of Acronis Linux Boot-CD failed, because the new adaptec controller wasn´t recognized. So I booted the system from the old SATA-Disk which I connected to the new SAS-Controller. With the recovery I expanded the drives size from 73 GB to the new HDD-Size (1 TB).
After this, every backup-task to tape-drive or to USB-Disk freezes the system from time to time.
The task itself perfoms properly and ends with stat O.K., but there are many periods during backup where the system is freezed an not accessible. The system is running a SCADA-System (Siemens SIMATIC WinCC, based on Microsoft SQL-Server 2005). When I stop the SCADA-System during backup, everything works fine.
Tomorrow I will try to reinstall B&R 10 (Build 13762) on the system to fix the problems.
Is there sombody out there with an idea what kind of "Gremlin" works on my System?
Are there any known problems with the new Adaptec controller or with changing drive-sizes?
Im leaving in the hope somebody can help me!
Correction: Today, stopping the SCADA-System WinCC won´t help to fix the freezes during backup!?

Hello Peter,
thank you for your assistance.
At first:
- I´m not having problems with booting the machine, so I didn´t rebuilt the boot sector.
- The latest Adaptec RAID driver for this OS is installed.
Two weeks ago I made a clean install of B&R 10 on the Server via remote connection.
Doing this, I had to uninstall B&R 10 from the setup program, because there was no entry in the Windows startmenu to do the uninstall!?
After the clean reinstall an manual reconfiguration of all backup-tasks the backup seemed to work fine.
But now, my customer reported to me, that the backup-taks to tape will take much longer than it did after the reinstallation
(appr. 4h than 2,5h before).
After all, Im having a problem to Backup this Server with an WinPE 3.0 Acronis B&R 10 bootable media.
I configured the media with the needed RAID driver an sent it to my customer.
Even with this bootable media the backup to an external USB-HDD hangs completely after a few minutes of running time.
Can this be a problem with the Adaptec Controller or with the file-system?
May a "chkdsk /f" help?
Thank you for further ideas!

Hello MickvS,
Thank you for your reply.
In Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 we had some issues at usage of WinPE boot media. I saw, that you tried updating to build 10.0.13762. Do not forget to recreate the bootable media after this step. I also suggest using AIK 2.1 and 32bit drivers only. You should also try to use the Linux based boot media that for most conditions can detect Adaptec Raid systems.
See these information’s from our knowledge base:
- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 WinPE ISO Plug-In
- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Adding Acronis Plug-in to WinPE 2.x
- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Bootable Media Builder Does Not Automatically Add Drivers to WinPE 3.0 Media
- Acronis Bootable Media: Use Only 32-Bit Drivers for WinPE-Based Devices Recognition
If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.
Thank you.
