Trying to find out why some files are failing and being skipped.

Thread needs solution

Am getting lots of the following error messages (for different files) during a scheduled backup:

The knowledge base is useless as it doesn't recognise that event code. This is a brand new installation with 2 backups scheduled. 1 (the OS backup) is working fine but the backup of data is throwing up lots of these errors.
We had a drive fail in our RAID array which caused some file corruption which may be the cause of this but I'd like to be sure that's what the event code refers to before I take more action.

Using Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 update 5 on Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.

Can anyone shed some light on this event code?

May be this backup task is configured without file-level snapshot (or this option is set to 'if possible' and snapshot was not created) and they are locked by some process. Can you open these files in e.g. notepad?

I can open the files in notepad and in the correct application (Word) if they are docs.
I have set the backup to use the create snapshot using VSS option - as the backup is still running I can't confirm a file-level snapshot setting is configured but I will check.

Anyone have any idea what this Acronis error means?

More and more files are being skipped with this error with no information from Acronis as to WHY they are being skipped. Kind of useless having a backup system which doesn't back files up and doesn't tell you why.

I've checked and file-level snapshot and VSS are both enabled.

At the moment the backups cannot be relied upon so it's kind of urgent that I find out what the error means!!

I'm still getting these errors. Is there anyone at Acronis that can shed some light on the error message?

Hello Daniel H,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

When performing file- or folder- backups from source that is not part of the machine (mapped drive or UNC path) you cannot create backups using the snapshot technology. As a result only files could be backed up, that are not locked by a process or opened by any other program.

This message is an information, that should show you, which particular item has not been backed up, because it was locked by the system. The backup in this situation can do only the same action as a copy operation can do.

The only workaround is to map the external drive via iSCSI protocol to the machine. In this situation the drive is seen as a default internal drive and you will be able to perform a normal snapshot on it.

If you need additional assistance, please create a system report of the affected machine and contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

We're using Backup & Recovery 10. I would have attached an Acronis System Report but that crashed with the following error:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Error
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Failed to obtain system information.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Details
Code: 14,745,602(0xE10002)
LineInfo: 0xA9D27ED310C42D36;

Module: C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\BackupAndRecovery\mms.exe
Message: Failed to collect system information.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Completing a File level backup of a LOCAL disk array and NOT a network drive or UNC path.
The files in questions can be opened without error in an appropriate program (notepad, paint, word etc).
File-level snapshot is set to Always.
Volume Shadow Copy Service is set to create snapshots using VSS.

Is there any information regarding the event code/s so I can get an idea why Acronis is skipping these files?
If you need a generated system report I'm going to need some help do that too :(

Hello Daniel H,

Thank you for your reply.

Can you please check, which build of the product you are using (latest was 10.0.13762)? Older builds showed this problem when generating a system report. If you are not using a SQL Database, you can switch off the VSS usage. Or you change the usage from Acronis VSS provider to MS VSS provider, following this article from our knowledge base.

When creating the system report fails, you also can use the Acronis Info Utility.

Additionally I suggest to exclude folders from file backup with this format: c:\temp\, or to use the partition backup and exclude there the folders you do not need. However, a disk or partition backup should be performed. Only this kind of backup ensure, that you can run a recovery in short time with system and application as well files in one step.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

We are using build 10.0.13762

The only options I can find for VSS usage are 'Create snapshots using VSS' and 'create snapshots without using VSS' I can't find an option to select a different VSS provider. Where would this be?

Using the Info Utility I have run a report but I can't attach it here as the compressed file was well over 100MB (nearly 9GB of files were generated by the tool).

We have already excluded all the folders we don't need/want backed up. We can't run a disk backup as the source disk is bigger than the destination (although there is only about 1TB of data so a full disk image will fail.

I can't understand why these files are being skipped as they are not system files and not files that are open in other applications at the time of the backup.

Hello Daniel H,

Thank you for your reply.

To make it clear, you need to modify registry keys in order to switch the used VSS provider. You could see this, when following the provided knowledge base article I have linked in my last post. Please see: Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Using Microsoft VSS instead of Acronis VSS.

See Acronis Backup Software: Recovery of Large Amount of Files from a File Backup Fails.

And see Difference between File Backups and Disk/Partition Images.

Usefull informations for the community to help here are:

  • MSInfo32 output (*.nfo); Go to Start - run - msinfo32.exe -> File - export;
  • Screenshots of all of your settings in defined backup task including all options, that differ from default;
  • Information about source drive (number of files and folders)

In general, if a volume contains many files, consider using a disk-level backup instead of a file-level one. In this case, you will be able to recover the entire volume as well as particular files stored on it. See Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Restoring Specific Files and Folders From Disk Backup.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.
