TI 2013 (Build 5551): Slow transfer speed when full backup to external USB drive
Hi,
I have been reading "2788: Slow Backup Speed in Acronis True Image" and followed the instructions but still encounter issues with long runing full backup in my Win7 x64 system.
Currently TI executes a full backup that supposed to run for more than 1 day.
What I've done so far is:
- Made sure that "Optimize for performance" is enabled for the usb device
- TI Backup performance options are set to:
- compress level: Normal
- priority: normal
- Copied a 1 GB file by using windows7 explorer from internal hdd to the external usb drive, which takes about 15 min.
Typicaly a TI 2013 diff backup takes about a few minutes only with .tib files sizes ranging between 500 MB and 6 GB
Windows Task manager says that TrueImage.exe *32 requests 107.688 k of ram while other processes and applications are runing.
Currently Firefox requests the maximum amount of ram on my system with 6GB physical ram.
I also have Norton Antivirus 19 installed and runing.
Any ideas about how to troubleshoot are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bodo

Thanks, its connected to a USB 2.0 port, however I'll check that out, also USB bios settings

Yes, check into that. Another possibility is that your external HD is really slow. It shouldn't take 15 minutes to transfer 1 GB.

Your data is safer is you set the usb for quick disconnect rather than performance.
I would also open the Device Manager and in the Univsersal Serial Bus controllers listing,
I would adjust each usb root hub power settings and uncheck (if checked) the option for the computer to turn off the usb device.
Can you disable Norton or add an entry to Norton to allow Acronis.
Is Firefox necessary during a backup?
Check he Disk backup options on write speed to make sure the setting has not been turned down.

Thanks for your input, appreciate it very much.
Now, bios settings for usb 2.0 devices are set to Hi-speed, and disabled a USB legacy setting.
The device is a Seagate FA Goflex Desk drive with 3GB capacity.
I suspend Norton Antivirus and tried again to transfer a 3GB file to the usb hdd.
Also unchecked all usb root hub power settings
Windows now estimates a transfer time of ~50 min or 7.2 MB/sec.
I see if a complete formating of the drive would help.
Again many thanks!

If you are going to format the goflex and using Win7 or 8, try formating as style GPT disks rather than Style MBR.
The GPT is more suited for the larger partitons as the MBR has a 2.2GB limit.
The option "quick disconnect" setting is preferred as the disk is usb and the user often times does not do the proper safety type shutdown to the disk so the quick disconnect is a safer setting and really should not have that much a bearing on the overall speed of the disk.

Thanks! The usb drive is now formated, however that GPT option was not vailable. It seems the drive is still slow,
I did a speed test using CrystalDiskMark
Option quick disconnect is enabled.
Not shure if it's a usb driver issue.
Again many thanks

After disconnecting all USB devices from my PC and then reconnecting each one step by step
letting windows install its usb drivers completly, TI backup up speed is now considerable faster than before.
A full backup (50 GB) runs 45min, before it was 10+hrs
