Strange backup files
What a disapointment this product is after all the good reviews.
After previous problems started a new backup plan as advised on this forum.
Fullbackup then incremental backups for 28days then fullbackup etc.
Worked fine first two cycles but now doing something strange.
....full_b1_s1_v1 then inc_b1_s2_v1 thru to .....s29_v1
then
...full_b2_s1_v1 then inc_b2_s2_v1 thru to .....s29_v1
then
...full_b3_s1_v1
All ok to this point but then
....inc_b2_s30_v1 onwards
WHY? why not ...inc_b3_s2_v1 etc
Why have increments continue from fullbackup 2 and not form the latest full backup.
What does this mean? IF i have to retrieve it.

I have just had a thought, you aren't the only one reporting this problem.
You mention 28 days, I wonder if somehow TI is having a problem with February only being 28 days instead of 30 or 31 causing TI after a 28 day cycle to revert to the last archive that had a 30 or 31 day cycle.
Just thinking out loud here.

Did look in the logs found no suggestion of a error or problem.
None of the other issues occurred as far as i am aware.
AS for last point mine is based around every 28 increments regardless of the time in the month.
It should start a full backup after 28 increments of the previous full backup which it has done but seems now to be created increments of second full backup rather than the 3rd one.
So i suppose i want to know if needed to restore from these backups what do i do. Can i rely on them or should i start again. Not keen on that as i have already done that before.
i did delete all the increments from the first full backup. I assume they are redundant once a 2nd full backup occurs?

Update the latest backup of 10 mins ago is now the first incremental backup based on the 3rd full backup. I am bewildered?Strange. Its 27th of march here in canberra.
Date order of backups
First full 23/1/2013
2nd full 21/02/2013
first inc of 2nd full 22/02/2013
3rd full 22/03/2013
first inc of 3rd full 27/03/2013
Can someone tell me what to do if my hardrive failed tonight for example sake. How i would backup.
Take the 3rd full and tonights incremental?

Strange, it is the 27th March here in Qld as well :)
If you click on recover, what archives and images does the timeline offer you?

In this a "files only" backup or a partition backup?
Would ou consider posting a screen capture of your backup scheme? or what are the specific settings of your backup scheme?
Do you recall editing or modifying the task any time prior to the unusual number?

its a disk backup backsup the whole of my c drive.
Having trouble working out how to screen dump the backup options page
But basically its standard incremental backup.
with create a full version after every 28 incremental versions.
Dont believe i changed any other parameters other than validate every 28 days (which i dont is has done )
When i press the recover button it comes up with error screen looking for incremental backups of the first full backup. I previously deleted them to save space after the 2nd full backup was created. WAs this a mistake? I just thought i could use the latest full backup with any incremental backups done since.

Malcom,
If you are using Vista,W7 or W8 you can use the screen snipping tool (off the tools menu), this will allow you to select the part of the screen and auto save it as a png file. If using XP you will need to make a screen shot by pressing the Windows Start Button + Print Screen, then paste it into Windows Paint, and save as JPG or PNG.

Malcolm,
Check this link regarding Incremental characteristics.
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/40810
At this point, I would suggest you start a new task pointing to a new empty sub-folder. Use the attachment as a guide for your settings and adjust the 6 & 4 to fit your needs. Set the 4 to 1 if you only want to keep 1 revolving chain but TI will create its replacement before deleting any file so be sure and allow some space. This method will have the program performing the deletes rather than the user.
Your existing backups should be good (newest inc with newest full) but TI is complaiing due to the manual delete rather than using the program for the delete. Avoid editing the task which can cause issues.
Figure 11-Inc: Example of custom/incremental backup method settings
If using incremental type backups (which is full +?Inc), the 11-Inc is my recommended method. Change the 6 or 4 to fit your needs.
Allow space for 1 more full than your selected number (4) as TI will NOT delete the oldest full or chain until its replacement has been created. Also understand the limitations/risk factor of incremental backups. If one inc backups gets corrupt, all newer inc are worthless so avoid excessive number of incremental backups. Always maintain a full backup set which are current This explains why my keeping a reasonable number of x "recent version chains" can be important. Keeping a high number of incremental is a high risk factor to your backups and should be avoided.

Thanks for that explanation the diagram is spells out nicely.
So Just to clarify.
Your suggesting start a new plan based on the above.
The suggested method means that the system will start deleting backups once a fifth full backup is created.
Does that mean it deletes all the incremental backups associated with the first 4 backups and the first full backup after creating the 5th backup but keeps the last 4 full backups including the one just created.
So from then on after it creates a full backup it will delete the earliest full backup.
I can keep the very first full backup in this new plan by clicking the optional box as above.
Thanks for tip on screen capture.
Still no explanation why there would be days in between a new full backup and the start of new incremental backups though as just happened to my current plan?

Malcolm,
Does the task still show within TI and does it appear up to date?
What happens if you try a manual validation?
There have been varying degrees of success reported when having validation as part of the imaging task. I and othe MVPs tend to advise that you create a separate task for validation and have it run (if you wish to schedule it) after the actual imaging has completed. This seems to be the most reliable option.

hi Colin
Task has continued as scheduled and subsequent incremental backups have been successful and validated successful according to the log.
Does that mean the initial full backup is validated also?.
If not should i attempt a manual validation of it.
