Restoring a Back-Up Arhcive from an external back-up drove to e new computer
Before dismantling my old Dell computer, I created a back-up archive of the data and programs I wished to move to my new computer. My new computer (with Windows 8) is up and running with Acronis True Image Home 2009 installed. My question: How do I restore the backup archive to my new computer? Do I need to create a partition on the new hard drive in which to restore the backup archive, or do I do it straight to the C drive with no partition? Will the files in the 'Program' folder in the archive 'go' to the Program folder on the C drive?

What are you trying to do?
If you were to restore a full disk backup image of the old Dell to the new PC, it would wipe out everything on the new drive. So, you'd lose Windows 8 and have the OS of your old PC, which is likely not what you want.
If you want to transfer just the user data files from the backup image to the new PC, you can certainly do that if True Image is installed on the new PC.
BTW: ATI 2009 is not compatible with Windows 8.
Thanks for your post, Tuttle. I am avoiding a restoration of a full disk backup for exactly the reason you stated. Before dismantling mu old PC, I created a backup archive of selected data and program files that I would like on my new computer. Are you saying I will have to purchase an upgrade to ATI 9? Would you know if there is a Windows 8 compatible version of ATI and. if so, how do I go about transferring the files in the backup archive to my new PC?

You cannot transfer installed programs to the new PC. That is a Windows issue, not an Acronis issue.
If you don't want the latest version of ATI, there's a couple of options. Do you still have access to the old PC and its drive including data?
Yes, I do. Is the reason I can't restore the backup archive because the files were backed up from my old computer and can only be restored to it, or is it a Windows software issue?
You can restore the backup image. But, as I said, if you did the whole thing then that would overwrite your new Windows 8.
You cannot transfer installed programs because they are not just collections of files. Installed programs include dozens of entries in Windows registry, plus dlls, etc. It's a Windows issue that you can't simply transfer installed programs.

If you have access to the old PC, then you needn't worry about ATI compatibility. You could use various file-based backup tools to transfer your user data files from the old PC to an external drive, and from the external drive to the new PC. Another option is to network the two PCs and transfer directly from the old PC to the new PC.
There are many good, free file-based backup tools you could use, including Robocopy (command line tool included free with Windows), MS SyncToy (free download from Micrsoft), etc. I've used both those tools for such tasks.
