Can't do incremental backup

Thread needs solution

I bought and installed True Image and Plus Pack 2013 and ran a full backup. I don't know how to tell the program to do an incremental backup based on that full backup. When I select Incremental and Back Up now, it creates another full backup. I previously had True Image Home 2010 and did not have that problem. It listed the backups I had and offered the choice to Update each one.

I tried to contact Customer Support and it said my subscription has expired.

How much free support do you get when you buy the product?

How do I tell the program to do an incremental backup based on the existing full backup?

A task for Incremental or Differential will always begin with a full backup. That is necessary, as that becomes the baseline.

For an Incremental task, after the first full backup, subsequent backups will be incremental, each one based on changes since the previous Incremental backup, all the way back to the second backup being incremental based on changes since the full backup. As such, you need all links in the chain, all incremental backups right back to and including the first full backup, in order to Restore.

For an Differential task, after the first full backup, subsequent backups will be differential, each one based on changes since the first full backup. To restore, you would need just any Differential and the Full backup on which it is based.

You should not allow an incremental chain to become too long. An incremental restore depends upon every incremental in the chain being valid, including the original full. It's better to limit each chain to just a few incrementals, followed by a fresh full backup to start a new chain.

You should validate backups periodically. That would have alerted you much sooner if the full backup were missing or unreadable.

Tuttle, you did not understand what I wrote. After I installed True Image 2013 I selected Incremental and it made a full backup. A few weeks later I again selected incremental, and again it started to make a full backup instead of making an incremental backup based on the original full backup, so I cancelled the backup. If I can't get an answer on how to make an incremental backup based on the original full backup I am going to uninstall 2013 and reinstall 2010 which worked fine, and ask for a refund of 2013.

David,

In 2013, when you set up a backup task, you should set it up using the incremental scheme and adjust your cleanup / consolidation settings.

After the first full backup is created, whenever the task is run it will create the incremental backups you are trying to make.

If you create a task that performs a full backup, that is what the task will do over and over again. You can edit the task settings, but it is advisable to make a new task instead.

This is much different then the 2010 version.

Take a look at Grover's (Thanks, Grover!) guide to creating a backup task in 2012-2013 for some excellent advice on how to set up a backup that uses incremental or differential backup settings with auto cleanup/consolidation. http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28705

You did not understand what I wrote. Follow what James and I told you, which is the right way to do regular Incremental backups. That's better than blundering ahead with the way you want, which is not the approved safe method.

And, threatening to ask for your money back, just because you can't follow instructions, is not helpful. Plus, it means nothing to us as we don't work for Acronis.
