Error occurred while opening file

Thread needs solution

I get an "error occurred while opening file, insert last media of the archive & click retry" message when I click on "Backup now" to do an additional incremental backup to a backup job that already has about 6 existing incremental backups which have all backed up without errors. I backup to a firewire external drive from my desktop pc. I get the same error message from a 2nd pc which uses my wireless network to back up through the 1st pc to the external firewire drive. This has also worked perfectly in the past. I did install a new wireless router recently but I used it the last time I backed up the 2nd pc and it worked fine so I doubt the router is the problem. Windows explorer sees the external drive and shows all existing files on it, so there shouldn't be a problem with drive connections or mapping. I have edited the TrueImage backup path which seems to be accurate, however TrueImage help suggests typing in the UNC path rather than selecting a mapped drive to solve such a problem but there is apparently no place you can type it in - I'm only given the option of selecting previously mapped backup jobs. When I try to select a path from the 2nd pc over my network, it also asks for authentication to get into pc#1 (which has never occurred before) but will not accept the user name and password that I've been using for years. The external drive is not quite full and seems to have enough space for another incremental, and if space was a problem I should have gotten a message telling me there isn't enough room, so that shouldn't be the problem. I've found no help for this on the forum and I've tried everything I can think of, and am down to trying to reinstall TrueImage to see if that helps.

My gosh, not another impenetrable post.

Steve, if you want help, please think about the folks who must read your post. Use short, clear sentences or bullet points, and break thoughts into proper paragraphs. One solid block of text with long sentences, some of which contain descriptions of what happened while some are your thoughts on the matter, is not readily readable nor understandable.

OK, how's this?

I backup to a firewire external drive from my desktop pc. I installed a new wireless router recently but have already used it successfully to backup the 2nd pc.

The external drive seems to have enough space for another increment, and if space was a problem I should have gotten a message telling me there isn't enough space.

Windows explorer sees the external drive and shows all existing files on it.

The 2 backups in question already have 6 existing increments which have all backed up without errors.

I have edited the TrueImage backup path, however TrueImage help suggests typing in the UNC path rather than selecting a mapped drive to solve such a problem but I can't find place you can type it in - it only gives the option of selecting previously mapped backup jobs. Let's stick with one problem / one backup issue at a time. The first PC is backed up via firewire to external drive? So, network location and UNC aren't an issue there.

As this is an incremental backup, it sounds as though True Image is having trouble locating or reading the previous images in the chain. Did you edit the path for those, either in Windows or in the True Image backup task?

I hadn't edited the path before having this problem. When I started troubleshooting I noticed it showed the wrong path, so I changed it to the correct path in the Operations > Edit backup settings drop-down box and I also keyed-in the correct path in "configure disk backup process" under "Add backups > Disk and partition backup as though I were starting a new backup operation although I didn't actually start a new operation. When I did the latter, there was an alert that I didn't have enough disk space to backup the entire disk. Putting in the correct path in either place didn't make a difference - still getting the error message.

That's a red flag. Something changed, to change that path.

As you edited the path in the backup task, I would delete that task. Create a brand new task with your desired options, and don't edit it.

Thanks, I'll give that a try in the morning.

I actually tried to start a new task on my other desktop pc but it wanted me to authenticate onto my first computer with the external drive (which it has never asked for before) via wireless router and it would not accept my logon info for the 1st pc (which is my windows log on username/password) which TrueImage has been successfully using for several years. Not sure how to deal with that.
