Backup of a NAS to Ext Drive
I have a NAS device with approximately 6TB of videos stored on it. I would like to backup the NAS to a RAID storage plugged into to USB 3.0 port of the NAS.
I have Acronis 2012 and would be willing to upgrade to 2013. Will either one do the job. If not, is there any software that will. I would like to have the continuous backup feature so when I add a movie it just adds the one file without backing up the entire 6TB.
Thanks much for any help.

Hi - thanks for the reply!
No, it does not see the NAS unit when I try to create a backup template. I am not sure If I am doing everything correctly.
I have a Synology DS213 NAS.

When using ATI with a network drive, use a UNC path to your NAS device for a backup destination, not a typical friendly "mapped" drive. e.g.
\\192.168.2.25\My Backups\
It should also be possible to use a UNC path that includes server name rather than IP, such as
\\server1\My Backups\
ATI will not automatically detect a NAS drive. Once you start typing the destination path, you will be prompted for a username and password. You must use enter the username and password that has permissions to access the NAS share you are saving to.
Many users have had issues with NAS, not because of Acronis but because the router gets overloaded with data throughput and cannot keep a consistent enough connection with the NAS for True Image to image or restore.

I am wanting to backup my NAS Synology unit to an external Sans Digital Raid Tower containing 5 ea 2TB hard drives not the other way around.
The Sans Digital Tower is plugged into the USB 3.0 port on the NAS unit.

Much of what I wrote still applies. You'll need to type the path and login.

Ted,
Following MVP tuttles lead. Everything sounds good until the part where you have the Sans Digital RAID Tower plugged into a USB port the DS213. In theory in should work.
I've not tried to plug a USB or eSATA drive into one of the ports on my QNAP (for back up purposes). I initially asked about brand and model of NAS, because my QNAP can back itself up to an externally connected device on a schedule (on its own) . However, I instead back it up to another NAS on my network.
So I'm curious to know if Acronis will back up to the Sans Dig on the USB port.
Use MVP tuttles recommendations and let us know what happens. My QNAP has both 2.0 and 3.0 ports. if you try with a 3.0 port (if equipped) and it doesn't work, try a 2.0 next.

You guys are a bit above my on some of the "stuff" you are saying - sorry for my lack of knowledge.
1) I have loaded ATI(I figured out that is Acronis - I think) and have been all through and do not see where you would manually type a path and login.
2) have not figured out what UNC path means.

Not a problem. Let us know what you need explained.

I think it's the field beside the browse button. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, so I can't check.

It's the network path to your NAS, including the LAN IP and folder path.
e.g.
\\192.168.2.25\My Backups\

Hi Back again -
Made some progress - I can connect to the NAS then intern set the DESTINATION for the backup to the external drive plugged into the NAS.
It does not allow me to "browse" as the source. It only lists the drives that are on my main PC - Screen Shot attached.

Ted,
Not in front of my PC... If memory serves, Disk Back Up this is only for local disks. I don't have my NAS mapped so I don't recall. Select Other BackUps on the Back Up and Recovery Tab. Now browse to your NAS as the source and the shared array as the destination. Let me know if that works for you. This can be scheduled also.
Boot Media is certainly another option too.

Hi -
You are absolutely correct! That did solve the issue of being able to route both source and destination drives.
One other question - does the sync function work as I think it does. If I sync the NAS unit to an external USB drive all the files on the NAS will be copied to the external USB drive and any files added will be copied as they are added.
By the way I did upgrade to 2013 versions of both the standard version and the plus package today.
