Hung backup task and odd snapshot name : 5%2f5%2f13 1:40:03 PM

Thread needs solution

I used to have problems with hung snapshots out there all the time in vmProtect 6 and 7. Now on vmProtect 8 that usually does not happen. Though I've had many instances for months of hung tasks, usually the snapshots were deleted. So we decided to "split up" our vmProtect into two virtual appliances, instead of trying to run all our backups under the arms of one appliance. So our AVP1 appliance has a task out there stuck at 58%, started 5/05/2013 13:35. It indefinitely says 5 minutes remaining, 6.138 MB/s.

This task backs up 3 very similar light used Server 2008 R2 machines. Not I notice on the one machine there is a snapshot out there with the name 5%2f5%2f13 1:40:03 PM.

Why I am kind of upset about this is:
1. Hung snapshots were supposed to be fixed in AVP 8.
2. Splitting the jobs across two appliances should of fixed our problems (it did for a little while).
3. This task is backing up 3 machines that are so little used, I can't foresee any resource contention issues during the backup.

What can we do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Hi KJSTech,

The hanging task issue had been recently reproduced in our QA lab (we were able to achive it via stress testing after multiple attempts) and we plan to fix it in the 9th version (in the release). Most likely it has to deal with the Linux kernel specifics, but we need to investigate it.

The snapshot is left since the task didn't finish. There is a cleanup algorithm implemented in vmProtect 8 which removes the snapshots if it detects improper program close. If you reboot the appliance then the snapshot which is left on that Win2k8 machine will be removed within 1 hour after the appliance reboot (appliance will detect this snapshot as subject for removal).

Thank you.

I detached "Hard Disk 3" from the virtual appliance which looked like it was pointed to a copy of the snapshot disk of said virtual machine? Well then I was able to consolidate backup.

Today on this virtual appliance I have 5 stuck backups again! I thought we resolved this when we split up AVP into 2 machines each tackling half the load.
The first three tasks are stuck at 0%.
The next one, our big file and print server is stuck at 90%. Though there's no snapshots on this VM so it cleaned up.
The last stuck task is from Sunday, 5/5 - which I originally opened this thread about.

Should I just reboot the appliance, or should I collect logs before doing so? At any rate, if I don't hear from you today, I will just reboot it because 5 tasks are stuck in the running state - not actually doing anything. So if all 5 slots are filled no backups will run tonight.

Hi KJSTech,

There is no need to collect additional logs since we've already captured this issue. There is one newer build with updated Linux kernel which should help (so far it is running good in our QA lab for 3 weeks in a row backing up several VMs every 30 minutes in different tasks). It's not an official one yet, but would be definitely worthy to give a try in your environment to get rid of the hanging task issue. I will send it to you in a private message with the setup instructions.

Thank you.

Same problem here. After rebooting the appliance everything works fine. But after several weeks a backup task will not finish.
"Cancel" the task --> Status: Abbrechen
I have to reboot the appliance to start the task again. Other tasks run as scheduled and seem not to be affected.
Can you provide me the link to an updated build?

Thanks,
Kurt

Hi KurtA,

I would recommended you to subscribe for vmProtect 9 Beta program as described here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/42675 . The new version is currently in pre-release stage (it is already quite stable - we're fixing just minor bugs which do not affect the core functionality) and contains updated Linux kernel which should help in your case. You can either install a new appliance from 9th version or upgrade your existing one (even upgrade from German to English version will work).

Thank you.
