Hi ece,

Yes, that is correct. There is no split option which you can define in GUI. However the splitting is performed automatically when you save backups to FTP/sFTP locations: the archive is created in "multiple files" format and is split into 2GB chunks (this is done due to specifics of FTP protocol/implementation to allow proper search in archives).

Thank you.

That's unfortunate. I have two ESXi's. Each of them has it's own VMP (is that the proper configuration?) to support network-read-free backups. They backup to an external location. Now those ESXis have asymmetric storage usage. One of them uses almost 4TB, the other one very little. Now I can only attach 2 drives to the external location, each of them has 4TB. The backups get mirrored to the external drive. One of the ESXi hosts will soon use more than 4TB of backup, and I would like to be able to split the archives in such a way that I can use the plenty of space left on the other drive.
Any idea how to solve this?

Hi ece,

I'd suggested to simply split your backup task into several smaller ones, which back up not all VMs but only a part of them (let's say 3 tasks, for 33% of VMs each). You can set a couple of tasks to back up to 1st destination, while others will be backing up to new destination. This will generate separate independent archives which can be used for recovery.

P.S. Actually backup splitting feature wouldn't help you too much here even if it was present, since it splits archives in one destination only rather than distributes the archive chunks accross multiple locations.

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

thanks for your sugesstion, but this looks like it will make (esp disaster, but not only) recovery extra complicated, since we need to search in multiple backups.

That's correct, but I could decide how to spread the archive files across the external drives when transferring them from the backup location (NAS) to the external drives. Symantec Backup Exec Vray Edition splits the archive files by default :(

Hi ece,

Just a few more cents: there is no need to search through the individual files, since the VMs list is build up basing on the folder contents in View->Recovery Points view. This view scans through _all_ archives present in the folder and brings up the list of VMs present in the archives (no matter if VM is backed up into different archives), so it may be not as complicated as it may seem :)

Thank you.
