ATI Home 2013 won't increment previous backups
I back up to an external HD. Because the drive isn't permanently connected to my laptop, the drive letter may change. Today, Windows shows the external drive as G:\, and indeed the most recent backup is there, but True Image seems to think that my backups are on E:\ so has begun creating a backup under a completely new name rather than appending to the existing ones. Oddly, the new backup is on G:\! How do I convince it to creat an incremental backup for the existing file? I think Drive E:\ was a flash drive most recently, but hasn't been used since the last reboot. Obviously Acronis is storing drive info and it makes for very messy backups.

Assign a fixed drive letter as suggested by MVP Tuttle.
Stop using the old task and create a new task pointing to the new drive letter and also assign a new sub-folder for the the new backups yet to be creat ed.
You may find link 2 of interest. All illusrations are important but particularly the first 12 picture illustrations.

Thanks for your response, but I'm not sure how or where to assign a drive letter in Windows 7. When I plug in the USB device it is either assigned a drive letter automatically, or doesn't show up at all in Windows Explorer. Even when it doesn't appear in Windows, I get a message from the device telling me it could perform faster with a USP 3.0 connection so must assume it actually IS connected.
Each partition does have a recognizable label but True Image can't find those files, probably because of the drive letter problem.

One easy place to assign the drive letter is from inside Windows Disk Management. Use Windows Help file or Google search, if necessary.
Your message appears to be indicating that your compuer has a mix of usb2 and usb3 connectors and the messagecould be indicating you are connected to a usb2 connector, or using a usb2 cable when connected to a usb3 connector.
Visually look at each usb connection on the computer and a usb3 port may will have a BLUE connector. Your user manual should also indicate which is the usb3 connectors. Connect to the usb3 connector, if available. If attempting to connect to a usb2 connector, you may have to try using a usb2 cable.
A usb3 cable is backwards compatible but a usb2 cable is works only as a usb2 connection.
Some (but not all) usb3 cables are blue in color. One end of a usb3 cable is much larger as compared to its usb2 counterpart.

If the computer did have a USB 3.0 port I would use it, but speed is not really the problem here. I was able to change the settings so that ATI would point to the G:\ drive where previous backups were located, but even then the incremental backups were not stored with the existing ones. True Image placed them in a different folder. Although "incremental" they don't seem to be 'connected' to the other backups. I will look into Windows Disk Management to assign a different drive letter though.
I'd like to delete the full backups ATI made assigning entirely new partition names since those just confuse things. ATI doesn't seem to be able to do that. It just sits and spins for the better part of an hour. I've tried the 'repair' option from the TI Setup menu but it doesn't seem to helpl.
I admit that I back up less frequently than I'd like since every time I start ATI there is a different problem :-(
