During attempted backup, error message appears saying it needs to know something about "Volume 1."

Thread needs solution

Running WinXPPro and ATIH 2010 for the past month. Program seemed to be making backups of RAID 0 array to a third HDD quite well. Recently, though, during a backup, it generated an info/error window claiming that there was some problem involving something called "Volume 1". It gave me 3 buttons to choose: "Browse," "Retry," and (I think the third one was) "Ignore."

In the first place, what is a "volume"? And where does one look for one? And how does one recognize a particular volume, like "Volume 1"? Nothing on my computer entitled "Volume 1" was findable by the search function. I've seen it mentioned exactly once in the title listings on the first 25 pages of this forum, and that guy was having a compoletely different problem. I leafed through the entire downloaded manual, but found no information about volumes, much less an actual working definition.

Clicking on the Retry and Ignore buttons just made the little info/error window reappear instantly. The Browse button allowed me to look around my computer for whatever it might mean by a "volume," but clicking on various browsed disks, folders, and files was either impossible (because the "OK" button at the bottom of the browsing window was greyed out for those items) or completely useless (because, when it wasn't greyed out, the OK button simply returned me to the original 3-button info/error window.)

Trying to escape from this endless do-loop by clicking on the red X in the upper right hand corners of either the little error window and the larger Acronis main page window behind it caused only an annoying beep. Neither window went away. In fact, the only way to escape was to end the program with CTRL-ALT -DEL. Even then, clicking on the Acronis shortcut button on my desktop (to try to cancel the stalled backup) only put me right back at the same error window within a few seconds, and the "backup-in-progress-stalled" symbol in the tray at the bottom right hand corner of the desktop stayed in place. (And if clicked on, would send me right back to the same info/error window.) I had to use the OS program remover to delete Acronis TIH 2010 completely.

Well, now I've redownloaded and reinstalled the program and want to know how to avoid this problem in the future. Any help forum members might provide would be appreciated. // Sam Boehm

Hello Samuel,

I understand your question and will do my best to give you clear explanation of the issue.

The issue can take place in case a full backup, the one which is used to create an incremental backup archive to, is corrupted. So first of all I would recommend you to validate all backup archives in the set and see if you can find corrupted one. Or alternatively create a new full backup using the program manually and see if the issue persists.

If an Acronis product creates corrupt backup archives, please use the following scheme to troubleshoot the issue: Troubleshooting issues with corrupt backups

The troubleshooting scheme will guide you through steps to find out whether the backups are detected as corrupt due to the machine's faulty hardware, or they get corrupted during data transfer from network or USB, or due to the faulty transfer cable, or if the issue is in Acronis True Image running in Windows, or if the issue is with Acronis Bootable Media.

If you are not using the latest build 6053 you may want to update to it.  I am not certain if the issue is addressed in the new build at this point, however it is generally a good idea to be up to date. You can download the latest build from your account under registered products.

Let me know if the issue persists.

Thank you.
