Automatic Cleanup Not Working?

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I'm doing "differential" backups and I have my automatic cleanup setup but none of my old backups ever get deleted. Please see attached files for my automatic cleanup settings.

Can someone recommend an automatic cleanup setting that actually works for "differential" backups?

Thank you!

Perhaps there is a mis-understanding of what will occur.
Your backup scheme is set to full after 7 diff so 1 recent vesion chain =8 files.
your automatic cleanup is set to keep 5 recent version chains or after the first 40 files have been created.
The scheduled cleanup will begin to occur after full #6 as been created. Seconds after #6 full is created, the cleanup will begin to occur and the 8 files of chain 1 will be deleted.

Ok, thank you for your reply!

I have a 3TB USB hard drive that I'm using for my backups. I'm confused as to what would be the best settings to use this way I don't have to worry about my USB hard drive running out of space.

What do you recommend in terms of this automatic cleanup and full back up scheme to get this to work properly?

Thank you!

There was nothing wrong with your setup, you were just expecting the cleanup to begin earlier than your configuration permitted.

Let it run and see if what you get is suitable. Only you can judge your space as to how much space will be needed to maintain 5 chains and 1 extra full backup.

I am a big believer in using the "disk image" or "disk mode" backup as the type of backup because it automtically includes the entire contents of the disk plus any hidden or non-lettered partitions. I do not know what you are using but my backup type suggestion is illustrated in signature link 2 below in the first few pictures where "switch to disk mode" is illstrated.
