Changed from Ghost to True Image 2014
Hi
This software is driving me mad, but I am persisting because I've read a lot of good reviews.
My computer is a older win XP system but is capable of running the software.
I have two sata internal drives, one is the system disk.
They are both 1TB and around half full.
The destination drive is a 2TB USB.
I wanted backup software to keep me safe and reduce the workload of performing backups.
So far, I have spent all my time trying to get True Image to work, have had support and have done my own thing as well.
Here is a time line of events:
1) Started with a free version of Western Digital True Image by Acronis.
2) Decided to use the link in WD version to upgrade to full version. (16/12/2013)
3) Secured a discount and paid for software.
4) Installed software and registered etc.
5) Ran first back up during evening of 16th, by morning it had failed and I contacted Acronis via chat and was assigned case number 02076361.
6) Tulsi Saha Support Engineer took remote control of my system and started a new backup
7) This back up completed but the Validate would not, saying it might be problems with my USB destination drive.
8) I was instructed via email to run chkdsk and to Download and install Acronis driver update which I did.
9) This did not resolve the issue.
10) I made my own test file backup set of a folder with 5.35GB data and used the same USB external drive.
11) The backup and validate completed successfully!
12) However noticed True Image was very slow, sometimes the programme would not start.
13) Used chat again 19/12/2013 and was advised to download a new install and run the repair function.
14) Did as instructed resulting in True Image not being possible to start at all.
15) True image generated errors as sent to Acronis in a further email. ***
16) I ran the Acronis file cleanup utility to remove all traces of True Image.
17) Re installed and application seems stable now, Validation of first backup is now progressing beyond the time of the first fails and indicating 9hrs 50 to finish.

18) Validation is still proceeding and is now half way done with 9hrs 51 showing to complete? Odd
19) At this point I expect Validation to be a success indicating that the clean install has fixed the problem, however until I can re start my system and make sure True Image is still fully functioning I request you do not close this case.
I will report my findings tomorrow.
20) OK to report back then.
Validation did complete successfully.
It took around 11 hours to run which is only a little less than the original backup processes took!
Back up file details My_partitions_full_b1_s1_v1 873GB file size backing up 898GB of data from my two hard drives, so not a massive amount of compression.
True Image seems responsive now and starts properly.
My concerns remain, why was there such problems initially?
Am I seeing typical times for the operations?
21) I tried to run a file backup of a folder on one of my internal drives amounting to 248GB, to a destination internal drive.
I had to cancel as the operation was so very slow and was pulling the rest of the system down.
The predicted time was over a day! I had seen this before with my USB external drive and attach a screen shot of this.
Surely if it takes 12 hours to do a full partition backup of both drives it should not take over a day to backup one folder?
Also, once again True Image has become very slow to load, in fact as I type this I can not get it to start up.
Eventually started after 8 mins!
So, yes I have an active support case, but this only seems to attract one reply per day.
So I was wondering if forum users can suggest ways to sort all this out?
Kind regards
Mike (Sussex UK)

Hi and thanks for getting back to me.
Yes, fully removed Norton Ghost before installing TI 2014.
I don't understand what you mean by backing up from the recovery CD?
ATI is my graphics card?
OK on tyhe time.
Thanks again

Sorry. ATI = Acronis True Image Home.

Ak OK Pat thanks, Another thing I have noted is that the monitor that sits near the clock on the task bar vanishes randomly! its the one that you can right click on to change priority etc!
Not sure about this software really, Goast was not as able but far less trouble :(

The monitor should only show up during backups.
Don't forget to test your ATI recovery CD. Boot the computer on it and try to restore a couple of files from your backup.

Hi Pat
Thanks, the monitor was not showing bup during backup!
Last night True Image would not start at all again! so I have today performed another clean install.
I also ran the Norton removal tool again to make sure.
Rebooted between each step as well.
True Image is up and running again, this is its last chance.
Got a very annoying reply for support today, advising me yet again to check the disc :( I sent them the same time line and other updates yesterday so feel annoyed it was all ignored.
I am currently trying to backup my photo/video album 200+GB and will see how that goes.
Assuming it works within a fair time I'll try the recovery CD and see if it all works.
But I have to say, while I very much like the features of TI, so far it all seems to be empty promises :(

Between you and me I would NOT backup the photo/video album using ATI. When ATI backups up files (or images) it puts them into the proprietary TIB archive file. If the TIB wrapper gets corrupted, you lose your entire backup. For disk images that is bad by your can recover by re-installing. For irreplaceable content (pictures, videos, work of trade or art), you are in big trouble. Rather use some online backup service and/or some sync software. The sync function of ATI is OK, but it doesn't allow you to keep versions. Some software like SyncbackSE allows you to keep version, set retention rules, etc.
ATI is the best software for disk imaging.

Hi all, OK the backup finished in a fair time, was saying it would be 20+ hours but in the end was done in about 6!
So then I started a validate and guess what it failed after 23% and declaied the backup corrupt :(
Re booted and tested the rescue CD that does work and I recovered a number of files from this apprent corrupt backup without issue!
I then started the validate again and this time its got to 85% done and has not failed.
OK Pat, that is a most worrying statement, the whole idea behind getting ATI was to protect those very files.
I note I can make backups in zip format would that be safer? is ATI just unreliable then?

Your validation might fail because of hardware reasons, without jeopardizing the backup. Validation can increase your level of confidence that you will be able to restore the data, but doesn't guarantee it. Also remember that validation validates the internal coherence of the backup data, but doesn't compare to the original data.
If you are paranoid about backup integrity, a simple double click on any TIB file will let you know about integrity issues as well.
I rarely validate backups. Just to verify that the chain is good, from time to time. I open backup files from time to time also. But mostly, I rely on fresh new full backups.
ATI is reliable, but the design creates a point of failure just like any other software that packs file in a proprietary container. The other point of failure is that if any partial file in a chain of backup gets renames, moved, corrupted, that can corrupt the entire backup chain.
COnsider user ATI to keep versions of files (like QuickBooks or Quicken, or your work items) and then use a simple copy or sync from time to time to some disk you take offline (or you could still be victim of a virus or Trojan like cryptolocker). For irreplaceable content, I would be paranoid. If you use ATI to back it up, use some alternative (at least to keep the last version - that works well for pictures and videos that don't change that much) on some local disk you take offsite, or online.
