[SOLVED] Backup is failing - Failed to read data from the disk

Thread needs solution

Error says check knowledgebase. That says try a repair (as I already have the current build). Try a manual backup same error.

Error again says...

What exactly is Hard Disk '2' mean. The error or message says to check the disk using Check Disk Utility and create a backup of the disk ??

Isn't that what Acronis is supposed to be doing, backing up the disk. What am I supposed to back up the disk with?

as for Hard Disk '2'.. why doesn't it say what disk that is?

List of what is being backed up?

This is a new box, new SSD primary hard drive C and the original hard drive now being used as storage is drive E.

Run chkdsk E: /R
YOu probably have bad sectors on your disk. If chkdsk doesn't find anything, check your disk manufacturer web site for a disk diagnostics tool and use it. Sometime those find things that chkdsk doesn't find.

While I assumed it was drive E, it would appear that is not the issue.

I have both checked it out and deselected it from the backup and the error remains.

I have selected ONLY drive C to backup and get the exact same error with none of the other drives selected. Drive C is the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB drive. That also checks out without any errors with both Checkdisk and the MFG tool to test it.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software yet the same exact error remains. Nothing other than Acronis is seeing this error. As a result, I have NO backup of my data.

Does Acronis have a problem using SSD drives?

Did you fresh install the OS on the SSD?

No I used the software that comes with the SSD to clone the drive. I then did a new install of Acronis 2014, recently upgraded since the first replacement workstation had Win8 on it. When Win8 turned out not to be compatible with both my usage and some key required software that I needed to use, the whole workstation was replaced with a Win7 Professional version (they replaced the whole computer).

Kevin,
Look at your disk via the Windows Disk Management option.
If you have hidden partitions, then temporarily assign a drive letter to it.
Then perform an erro check on ALL partitions as below from a elevated command prompt (or a command prompt with the "Run as administrator" option..

CHKDSK X: /R (where X is the drive letter assigned to the partition being checked)

Okay, GroverH kinda gave me the clue to look for and I solved the problem. Turned out it wasn't the hidden section though I did scan it with CHKDSK but drive C itself had some bad clusters. I had scanned this before, but with the confusion between Acronis and how it shows disks and how the computer shows disks it was hard to figure out what was actually failing.

I have successfully again, been able to backup the system and have put it back on a schedule.

I marked the thread Solved.

Thanks.

I'm using Acronis TIH 2014 on a Microsoft Surface 3 with SDD. I've had no image backup problems for 6 months. Now I'm consistently getting a "Failed to read data from the disk in sector 67,401,744 on hard disk '1' error. Failed to read the snapshot (0x10C45A) CRC error (0x100155) for a full backup.

If I skip the error I get about 3 more errors then Acronis finishes the backup up. If I verify the backup it passes. I've run chkdsk as administrator on the drive and it marches up to about 11%, stays there for a while, then reboots. Before starting windows it says chkdsk 100% complete. I don't know for sure if the SDD passed or chkdsk just aborted.

Acronis Knowledgebase has "37280: Acronis True Image: A Backup Attempt Fails with "Failed to read data from the disk" and 0x000101FE+0x0010C45A+0x00100155" that says it's caused by the product's snapshot driver. To fix download the latest build (6688) which is what I already have installed. Next is says to run the install file and select Repair. This didn't change anything and it fails the same.

Ray,

What brand SSD?

You might want to try running this utility, and see if it helps.
Let us know the results.

Use the refresh mode so it will read and write each sector while checking each sector.

Somehow I didn't get an email notification that you'd posted a reply.

I don't know who makes the Surface SDD.

I first downloaded just the Disk Check utility (Disk Check 1.2) from Puran Software. I used Scan mode which took less than a minute and reported 0KB bad sectors. It can't have really check much in that short a time so I download Disk Fresh.

In the help http://www.fact-reviews.com/info/diskfresh.aspx it doesn't recommend reading and writing each sector for an SSD. If Acronis' read would find a CRC error so should Disk Fresh. Test time should be faster too. So I ran the Basic Usage with both Read Only Mode and Make Report checked. It reported 2 bad or inaccessible locations: 66,017,280 and 66,019,328 and took 14 minutes. Acronis encountered 3 errors, the first at 67,401,744.

I repeated the test with Read Only Mode unchecked so it would read and write each sector. I got the same two errors. To see if any repairs were made with this refresh, I repeated the test with Read Only Mode again checked for a range of 65M to 68M and it found two different errors: 66,017,856 and 66,019,904. Their locations are 576 higher.
I repeated the test for the full range and the errors were again 66,017,280 and 66,019,328. The location of the error reported by Disk Fresh depends on the starting point. I can't explain why Acronis found a third error; maybe the number of retries are different.

From these tests the Surface SDD does have errors. The SDD controller does not correct the errors.

A few days ago Microsoft send me an email on the issue. I replied that it was not resolved and asked them for a more thorough SDD test.
