Backups taking up lots of space

Thread needs solution

I have a 2 TB external HDD that I am using for a backup location that has filled up quite quickly. As not much really changes on our server, I don't understand why the incremental backups are taking up so much space. As I understand, they should only backup what has changed from day to day. any tips will be greatly appreciated.

If backup is performed not in sector-by-sector mode (which may happen due to filesystem errors) - in this case incrementals will be big -- try to set up incremental file backup for some suspicious folders and check if they are larger than expected. There is no direct way to see what is included in incremental backup (i.e. you can see what is in full+incremental if you mount the backup, but not what changed files make it big)

So, what's the best backup mode to configure that will work? Right now I have the GFS type right now.

GFS is ok, but if you suspect that large incrementals are produced with no apparent data change it needs to be investigatedseparately.
