Some versions are not visible - extreme disappointment

Thread needs solution

Long story short:
[*] ATIH2014 Premium build 6614 installed and activated on Windows 8.1 Enterprise machine on 01/2014 (see http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/1-os.jpg)
[*] No antivirus, no indexing tools, no other conflicting software
[*] Created 6 file backups and running them manually last day of each month (thus all have 3 versions - Jan, Feb, Mar)
[*] Using the same version of ATIH2014 since I started
[*] File backups are very simple - one local folder is backed up to external hard drive; password protected, max. size 4.7GB (see http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/2-ok-backup…)
[*] Three backups are not correct (2 are missing versions in the Recover dialog, 1 unable to open file) although there was no error during the backup (see http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/3-two-versio… | http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/4-one-versio… | http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/5-failed-to-…)
[*] All three "corrupted" backups are validated (see http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/6-validating… | http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/7-the-backup…)
[*] All three "corrupted" backups are able to open successfully via TIB browser and recover all versions (see http://forums.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/8-tib-browse…)
[*] Adding the *.tib files via "Add backup..." - "Browse" does not make any difference

Anyone having the same issue?
I can't express my frustration with ATIH product. There has been so many issues it's not even funny anymore. I would assume it can do such a simple task, but it can not.

Please do not tell me to use schedmgr.exe and remove all the scripts. This MUST be working out of the box. ALL versions MUST be visible in "Recover" dialog if they are valid!

Well documented. Nice captures and pictures. I wish I had some good answers for you. Here are a couple comments.

Curious. What and where is drive F? Is this connected to a network, etc? How connected?
What backup scheme are you using and is the same for all?

For whatever reasons, the search function does not function well. When you want to know what is in the storage folder, it is much easier just to go inside the task and click the LOCATION option and all tib files in the storage folder will be listed. I personally prefer to see them listed in Folder/Detail mode which shows the full name, date and size, etc. See attachment 1.

For the tasks where the numbers are out of sync, you can try correcting like this next example.

One way would be to simulate doing a restore by clicking the restore button inside the backup task. This should prompt with a few errors and keep clicking ignore or retry, etc until you finish all the errors. Then cancel the process before really starting any restore. Recheck the task and the numbers.

If that does not work, Another option would be to start/simulate a manual validation and work your way through all the error messages. A full validation may not be needed to get the correction of numbers.

Let me know your results.

  • What and where is drive F?

Drive F is TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 1.5TB connected via USB cable.

  • Is this connected to a network, etc? How connected?

No, it is connected via USB only when I'm doing the backup (last day of a month).

  • What backup scheme are you using and is the same for all?

I'm using incremental for all (create only incremental version after the initial full version). No automatic consolidation. Splitting by 4.7GB, Max compression level.

Yes. Your picture shows the location button I was referencing. It appeared your were using the search function to find those files so my comment was meant for you to stop using the search option and use the location button instead to see what backup files do exist.

You wrote "What do you exactly mean by "clicking the restore button inside the backup task"?"
Sorry, my typing mistake. The word "restore" was wrong and should have read
"Click the RECOVER button inside the backup task" and work your way through the resulting error messages.
The Nexus folder shows 3 files and the Task summary shows 3 files but the Acronis Backup Explorer only shows the single 31st.
My thinking is try and get the program to correct is own history so I was suggesting the use the Recover button test. I was not intending you to perform an actual recovery--just click the Recovery button and do all steps up to the final step where you cancel the test rather than perform an actual recovery. The Toshiba would need to be connected in order to perform the test.

After that test, try doing a validation of the most recent Nexus backup. For this and the above test, connect the Toshiba to a usb2 port rather than usb3 port and see if there is a difference.

After both the above, then use the "add files to task" option so see if the 3 Nexus files will show in the Acronis Backup & Recovery screen.

GH21. How to add backup files to the listing of backup tasks for assorted uses such as validation or recovery or add missing files to backup tasks.

I would suggest to check the Toshiba via the two points below.

GH42. USB prevent sleeping.
GH43. USB Set caching/quick removal on usb disks.

Once we can get the Nexus corrected, then maybe we can fix the others as well.

PS: Yes, I understand file backups is the issue.
As your backup scheme has no real ending and will require some manual deletion of old files, you might want to consider future new tasks to use the "automatic cleanup" option so the program will do its own file deletion.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains.

(1) No, I was not using the search function.

(2) Still not following. There are no resulting error messages whatsoever. Recovery works well, it is just ignoring the versions that are missing (I can successfully recover 31 Jan backup for Nexus5 - obviously I cannot try that with Feb and Mar if they are not visible on the bottom of Acronis Recovery Wizard - http://forum.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2014/04/56453/3-two-version…).

(3) I will try to see if USB 2.0 makes any difference from USB 3.0 and let you know the result.

(4) After successful validation of all three versions and trying to add the *.tib files via "Add backup..." - "Browse" does not make any difference (I mentioned that before).

(5) I will try to disable USB sleeping, thanks for a good tip.

(6) I don't want it to have real ending. I don't want to delete old versions either manually nor automatically.

Lucian,

Regarding the #6 comment above, don't allow the number of incremental backups to get too many as the more inc that are added, your chances of a good restore dimiish. This link provides more detail.

http://forum.acronis.com/system/files/2-right-click-on-the-_missing-tib…
This capture shows the file extensiion to be "rar" and not the "tib" which I was expecting and use 100%. None of your other captues displays the file extension so I can only guess they may be the "rar" as well. Is the "rar" your only choice for the file type extension?

Even though you only see only the one file being displayed in the Acronis BAckup and REcoery window, as the displayed file is an "incremental" backup, the two preceding buckup will be restored first before the March 31. I believe if your were to open Windows Explorer and right click on either of the first two backup files, I believe they would be restorable as well. Question: when you open the Nesus Acronis BAckup and Explorer view and see only the one file displayed, the upper left hand corner of that display offers two views to see the contents. Does clicking the other diisplay option cause the missing files to appear?

If we are unable to correct the specific task, the new choice is to stop using the problem task and create a new task pointing to a new storage folder.

Lucian,
Not sure of any more help I can provide--being a volunteer.
If you have tasks where the summry number does not match the the number of files displayed in Aronis Backup & Explorer, you can try the fix simulating a recovery. If that does not work, then my only fix would be to stop using that task, and start a new task pointing to a new storage sub-folder. I wish I had a better suggestion but I do not.

Another option might be to restart the 2014 install program and choose the repair option, or to uninstall and re-install. You may have done this already.

Lucian, are you having the same issue as me? See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/56475

We bought Acronis TI 2014 less than a month ago and it's with great regret that we're going to have to ask for a refund as we are having quite a number of problems from backup errors of various descriptions, missing backup tasks in the Acronis file explorer, exclusion folders not being excluded and log in problems with the cloud backup facility, to name but a few.

We don't feel we can trust the software which is great a pity because I would have liked for it to have worked.

Annie:

Yes, it seems like the same issue. This is horrible bug. They seriously need to start coding better rather then focusing on Mac version for example.
