Failed to validate backup error - Acronis True Image 2014 Premium
Not happy with this product. Backup's have been successful for 6 months up until the time I needed to restore. TI couldn't find all the versions even though they existed in the share path. Luckily I was able to fix a corrupt Windows 8.1 system file by running sfc /scannow. decided to delete the current scheduled job, delete all the full and incremental backups from the NAS device and recreate the job from scratch. I performed a initial backup of my laptop (Full) into an empty directory on my NAS appliance. It completed without issue, however, it says "Versions: 150 (last: Today at 8:57 AM)". Shouldn't say "150" but instead "1". It also failed to validate backup. TI is either not cleaning up the registry or DB when I delete a job and select "Whole Backup". I know the solution would be to uninstall and re-install Acronis TI, but I'm not going to do this every time I delete a job and recreate it. Where is the reference to these versions being stored and why doesn't the counter reset to 0 when I delete the job (Whole Backup).

Enchantech wrote:Did you delete the scheduled backup job by using the TI application or did you delete the job and all the full and incremental backups manually using say Windows Explorer? If you used the TI app to make the deletions then this should have removed the references for those backups. In any case it sounds like the backup database file is now corrupt so to correct that problem do the following:
Delete the database file called archives.xml:
Windows XP: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%/Application Data/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database/archives.xml
Windows Vista, Windows 7: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database/archives.xml
Then restart Acronis True Image (close it and open again) that will automatically recreate archives.xml database. The database file will now only see the 150 file you mention. You at this point should be able to rename the 150 file using the TI app which in turn should rename the database archive entry.
Now rerun the validation and see what happens.
Enchantech,
Thinking back, I actually moved the backup folder to a new NAS appliance. When I went to delete using TI (Whole Backup), TI hung and I had to close it in Task Manager. I then deleted using Windows Explorer. I took your advise and deleted the archives.xml and restarted TI. I then performed a one-off backup (incremental) and the # of versions showed "1". In the backup folder, I have 1 full and 2 incrementals. Performing a validation and it seems to be working. Thanks for the tip!!

One more update on this topic. ALWAYS test a recover. If TI can't find all the versions, it will prompt to find it. Even though you point to the correct folder, TI hangs. After I had already performed a full and deleted the archives.xml file, TI found my incrementals, but not my full (version 1). So here is what I did to get TI to correct:
1. Deleted the backup job (Whole Backup)
2. Closed TI
3. Checked the backup folder and deleted any backups that TI didn't delete in step 1
4. Deleted the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database/archives.xml file
5. Restarted TI and recreated the job.
6. Performed a "Backup Now" - Full (Versions = 1)
7. Performed another "Back Now" - Inc (Versions = 2)
8. Tested a Recover. TI found versions and presented me with a drop-down box to pick either version.
