Suggestions to deal with a message without text, probably caused by True Image 2014

Thread needs solution

Hi Gurus,

On first term, let me excuse my poor ability to explain the problem I'm trying to deal with because I'm looking and facing that like a ball without salients with which I could catch it.

From time to time, more lately (and after almost two months running TI 2014 without problems) I've started to see some "empty message pop up windows" appearing on the screen when a backup is running. These pop ups seems to be error messages (by intuition I think that perhaps with a translation problem), because appear with buttons "Accept" and "Cancel" but without any text explaining the reason to select between both choices.

I'll try to attach images to the message (please be patient with this noob).

The only one relationship cause-effect I observed is that once pressed the "Cancel" option of some of these "empty message pop up window", sometimes I've seen changes in CPU usage on certain processes that were being shown in Task Manager: wininit.exe -> services.exe -> svchost.exe -> dllhost.exe.

I'm not concious about when appear these messages, because my backup processes (towards a local HD) are long lasting and they works unattended, I only see these messages on the screen some time later. Is probable that these messages aren't directly related with TI, but with a system component that is triggered by TI in some way.

I've supposed there could be a relationship with "Com Surrogate" issues in Windows 7 and KB2670838. I've already uninstalled that KB and also changed windows explorer preferences in order to activate flag "Always show icons, never thumbnails" (in my spanish W7 appears as "Mostrar siempre iconos, nunca vistas en miniatura"). That had no effect.

My basic data is W7 64 Bit Ultimate SP 1 updated, True Image 2014 build 6673.

Should I feel confident with that backups works fine?. Any suggestion?.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Hi all.

Additional info in attached images. This time was executing a drive cleaning, and I've got the same messages.

Best Regards.

Hi,

I followed with my research and found that.... (I'm not the only one fool).

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/503383/random-empty-dialog-box…

Currently I'm trying to execute TI 2014 in absolutely unattended mode (with user session closed) in order to see its behavior.

Regards.

Could you look in the TI logs and see if they are reporting any problems and do the same with Windows Error Reporting. To get to the last one, you need to right click on My Computer and select Manage, from there you will be able to click on system events and see if any acronis/True Image ones are there.

What Av/Firewall program do you use and is your installation set up for all users or just yourself?

Hi Colin,

Good point regarding application event logs... I'm used to put quite attention to errors in system event logs but also I have to recognize that I'm not used to do the same with application events. Paying attention now, I see there are some messages related with Windows Search and also with "NvStreamSvc" (as I've seen searching with Google that is related with NVDIVA driver). I take note to solve that old driver problem (that i see now it has been present since ages ago) but let me no link, by now, both issues because the previous period I've been using TI 2014 without problems.

About system event logs, there isn't any message that could make me remind or realize problems involved with that issue. In fact I'm a little bit paranoic checking frequently the contents of that log in order to ensure the healthy of the system.

At home I use Comodo Firewall and Avira Free edition. I'm used to be estrict configuring HIPS and FW in order to detect any rare thing as soon it could appear. All users, me also, usually run their sessions as common users and administrator is only used when is really needed (no for playing).

Now, the new facts are:

- I got back the system to a copy taken before that matter, but I've got the same results.

- I've reinstalled TI 2014 (repairing) two hours ago, and the only one test I did, it ran properly without any "empty pop up message".

Let me be optimistic... but, please, don't hesitate to offer any idea you think could be useful.

Thank you very much for your valuable time.

Could you try disabling Avira temporarily? In the past there have been problems between TI and Avira free edition.

This was a few years ago and I thought had been fixed, but it is possible an upgrade to the system or some other program has caused something to break, leaving you with the problems you now have.

Hello, Colin.

My intuition was wrong and reinstalling TI didn't offer better results. So, I focused on application errors you realize me that these should be solved.

These were two:

VSS 8194 "Error del Servicio de instantáneas de volumen: error inesperado al consultar la interfaz IVssWriterCallback. HR = 0x80070005, Acceso denegado". For this error I applied a recommendation to grant authorizations on a DCOM component (as explained here http://www.cobiansoft.se/oldforum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=6498)

NvStreamSvc 1 "No se encuentra la descripción del id. de evento 1 en el origen NvStreamSvc. El componente que provoca este evento no está instalado en el equipo local, o bien la instalación está dañada. Puede instalar o reparar el componente en el equipo local". For this error I tried to reinstall Nvidia "suite" driver.

I did something wrong... as explained me a blue screen (nice color). I came back to starting point by means of a system partition restoration (that demonstrates TI runs properly, mainly).

Next Steps had been:

- Reinstall TI (by the flies)
- Apply above explained DCOM trick (related with VSS 8194)
- Didn't touch NVidia driver (related with NvStreamSvc 1 )
- Uninstall Avira Free as you have recommended
- Install McAffe

... and these confirmed your suspicion, Collin. The system seems to run properly and doesn't appear any blank message more, by now and neither appear above mentioned application event log errors.

Currently I'm doing a long lasting backup to test it runs without problems. I'll confirm once it finishes.

We achieved the goal... or almost (I'm not fully sure). While eight backups were being done, the problem was repeated only once, in the third try, but all five subsequent backups ran properly.

Anyway, it is a great improve.

Despite I said previously regarding NvStreamSvc 1 "No se encuentra la descripción del id. de evento 1 en el origen NvStreamSvc..." the problem appeared another time. I've disabled the NvStreamSvc "NVIDIA Streamer Service" as per comment number 9 in http://www.overclock.net/t/1414320/errors-in-the-event-viewer-after-upd…. Could be (but is an unconfident affirmation) that after disabling that service, the system began to behave better... (probably by effect of casuality?).

Apart of these measures, I've decided to follow the recomendation, I saw sometimes when"Googling", about to use CCleaner to ensure the total deregistration of Avira.

Refreshing the steps I followed ... now these had been:

- Reinstall TI (by the flies)
- Apply above explained DCOM trick (related with VSS 8194 error)
- Apply unabling NvStreamSvc service ("NVIDIA Streamer Service", related with NvStreamSvc 1 error)
- Uninstall Avira Free
- Install McAffe
- Clear registry with CCleaner.

By now it seems to run properly.... after reasonable period, by repeating backups without problems, I'll suppose that this issue is already solved.

Thanks a lot for your valuable time!.

Glad to hear you have solved the problem. Let's hope it stays solved! :)

To whom would be interested in.

No one of the previous steps got me the final solution. The messages appeared again.

After contacting support, and doing a mix of their suggestions and my poor criteria, these were the steps I did and finally seems that these (or some of them) have solved the situation.

- Uninstall completely of ATI 2014
- Use CCleaner to delete any registry entries that could have been "misplaced"
- Create a new administrator user
- Install ATI 2014 with the new administrator user.
- Deactivate the ATI 2014 option for automatic search for backups.

I think the problem was caused by an inconsistent content in the ATI 2014 index of backups. That probably was induced by two facts: activating the automatic search for backups and using removable media in rotatory alternation. I suppose that the removal and installation (unlike reinstall) of ATI 2014 erased or cleared the backups index and therefore the source of the problem. The main clue was provided by Windows Sysinternals Process Monitor program, which made me notice that the involved thread had all events messages related to backups names.

In short: uninstall completely and install another time (instead of reinstall). If it doesn't work, consider the rest of steps described.

Best regards.
